Can anyone tell me the best horse charity to leave money to in a will?

I would prefer a smaller one that struggle to get funds.

How about Remus Memorial Horse Sanctuary in Essex its seems to be well run and the horses have a home for life.

I have no connection to them just stumbled across them when I was searching for info on care of an elderly pony.

Yep - I would prefer to support a charity that REALLY needs it! That's why EMW are top of my list! Straight sanctuaries are all very well - and EMW has two - but I like the fact that they are also VERY actively involved in campaigning to improve conditions in markets - where FAR too many horses suffer.

I'm glad someone thinks they'll have money left to leave to anyone, when they've had horses!!:D

Any horse charity is great in my books, but if were to pick one above all the others, I too would go for EMW. Elaine of EMW is one of my FB friends - and If you were to see her FB posts, I think you'd only just begin to realise just how much time and effort she puts into this small, little known charity, and how much EMW deserves support.

Bransby Home of Rest for Horses. They're at Saxilby Lincolnshire, and well worth a visit. So caring.

I've worked with several equine charities and in my opinion the one that is the best run and makes the biggest difference is SPANA www.spana.org

Have a good look around their website. They make a huge difference to working equines who have the hardest lives of all, and this also helps the families that depend on them for an income.

We used to raise money for them at Liverpool Vet School when Derek Knottenbelt was chairman of SPANA, and since then I've done a couple of projects with them and I've always been hugely impressed with the way the organisation is run, the way the money is spent and the efficiency of their work. Unfortunately in my experience many charities waste money either through mismanagement or well intended but misguided projects.

I would go with the census on a smaller charity. I live very near bransby and my OH does some farm work for them and although they do great work they are deft not in desperate need as some smaller charities are x

i would specify an amount in pounds to be donated in feed value from a feed supplier. that way you are not funding office staff/ resources etc. to be delivered in bags of food. sadly so many rescues eat their own money on things that do not benefit the horse.

I agree with that. It's why I support small charities, in particular EMW, their overheads are the minium.
You can look up a charity's annual accounts on the Charities Commission website before you make your final decision. It helps you to get a picture of their situation and how they spend their money.

Yes I've also worked with the Brooke, they are very similar to SPANA (see my post above) in the type of work that they do. However, I feel that the money is better spent and targeted with SPANA compared to the Brooke, much less wastage on the ground, probably because they are not such a large charity.
