Evening all. Just looking for any tips on the best horse insurance companies. I was going to go Petplan but I see that any conditions previously claimed for in previous year will not be covered at policy renewal. Is this normal for equine insurance? Thanks

Yes, that's pretty standard for horse insurance. And even if you don't claim for it, if it's been on the go for over a year and is on the veterinary history for that horse then it will be excluded.

The 'good' insurance companies will narrow down the exclusions as much as possible (e.g. just the coffin joint, just x/y/z medical condition) rather than blanket 'lameness' excluded. Occasionally you can get exclusions lifted if the horse has no further problems with said condition for a set period of time - but this can be difficult!

Main things to consider would be how long they will offer full vets fee cover for (e.g. some stop at 15 which isn't ideal, petplan will go up to 25, NFU will cover indefinitely I think), make sure it's not 'external injuries only', and check the maximum vets fees you're insuring for - I have seen a few policies recently that only cover up to £2000 which wouldn't go far for anything surgical.
