What is the best equine barranca that will cover vets fees for things like ulcer scoping, hock injections, colic surgery. That actually pays put rather than try and worm ways out for small print exclusions?

I had good cover with NFU. They paid probably around 10k-15k on my horse a few yrs ago.
I don't know what they are like now as after about 3 years with them there was alot of exlusions and too expensive . But whilst i was with them originally they were great and paid out for scoping, ulcer meds, multiple x rays, injections etc

NFU are about the best but expensive. They paid out twice on one of my ponies for unrelated issues without any quibbles at all and I only changed to Harry Hall, an injury only policy because of the ponies ages, one was excluded everything and the cost.

NFU were fantastic recently. I had 3 large claims and then eventually had to PTS my pony following vets advice. I had been with them 15 years and had quite a few issues in that time and all paid no quibbles.

Call handlers very compassionate and helpful. You get what you pay for I think.

How long does it take for cover to start? I am a massive over thinker and my mare has started being stroppy when doing her girth up. So I have googled it and decided it is either ulcers or kissing spine!!! ?.

Or she may have puled a muscle doing the splits in the field. So try not to worry too much.

There is normally a 2 week period called a deferment period for anything other than accidental injury.

Petplan and NFU paid out on four deaths none of which were my fault. SEIB have been pretty good and paid out on all Lari's claims but they refused to cover him for vets fees now. He's covered for death of horse or pts under BEVA guidelines only.

so if you take cover out now it would be insurance fraud if you say she has no problems so they don’t exclude the above

The only lifetime policy is I think Agria. If I had another young posh one and I could afford it (it’s pretty comparable price wise) I’d be with them.

It is not comparable to other insurance it is co insurance so you pay the excess and 25% of the bill.

I think it is quite new so I expect it will take a while to bed in.

I wonder if it excludes pre existing conditions. In the FAQs it mentions x rays so perhaps to get the insurance you have to have your horse x-rayed and for them to be clean.

You never really know until you make a claim who is the best insurer. Over the years we've been with various insurance companies. We'd been with NFU, SEIB & KBIS. The insurance we are with at the moment is Horse Insurance uk. We thought we'd give them ago as they were considerably cheaper than the others. A girl on our yard was with them & she had a horse that forever needed the vet comping our. She had numerous callouts & every one was paid for by Horse insurance uk. We had a lung issue with one of ours, coughing & mucus. This was causing big problems as he was a performance horse, show jumper. Our vets came out & gave him various medications and some steroids hat needed to be administered through a nebuliser. The vets submitted the bill to the insurance company hey thought we were with, KBIS. The reply from them was in two parts. We weren't insured by them & two they do not pay for the nebuliser (Over £800). They then submitted the bill to Horse Insurance uk & they paid for the lot, including the nebuliser. We are still with that company with one of our horses, the other one is 25 years we don't insure him & if he needs any treatment we will pay. Moral of the story, just becaue the premiums are cheap don't automatically think they are not as good as some of the older established companies.

You are in a grey area with regards to fraud as you are only taking out insurance because you think your horse has a problem which you should disclose on your application form which would most likely result in an exclusion.

I was with NFU for many years and whilst not the cheapest they were very good to deal with.

Most policies have something along the lines of that only accidents will be covered for the first 'x' days (which is usually about 30).

When you make a claim the first thing the insurance company will ask is on what date did you notice the issue. If you suspect that there is a problem, you would be committing fraud by taking out insurance and then claiming for something that was already present. Tbh people doing this push premiums up for everyone else.

Sorry OP.

I am with E & L and have been for 7 years. I was with KBIS and I callee up one day to check the amount of my cover, I was planning what to do with a renewal, I happened to ask if ulcers were covered in my policy. Next renewal they sent me excluded them despite never been scoped etc. id steer clear of them

I'm guessing the horse would actually have to be diagnosed and that fact witheld for it to be fraud.

At the moment its just supposition. It could be due to 101 other things.

no it’s if you have any suspicion and should report from when the clinical signs started. Doesn’t matter what they are caused by, they predate the policy starting.
