I'm with the much slated E & L, the premiums are reasonable and I have never had any issue with them paying out. (They were recommended by a friend, who had some massive vet bills, as paying out without quibble.) Premiums vary depending on what you want to do with the horse, and the previous health record. I'd imagine at 15, there will be some exclusions.

If the horse passes a vetting there shouldn’t be any exclusions unless there is something the owner specifically tells you that you must pass on. I just got veteran cover for death and disposal from Kbis for £280

There will be exclusions simply because of age - regardless of whether they pass the vet or not. (And nothing truely"passes" these days!). It does depend on what you want to do but I don't insure any of mine past 15 and only past 11 if they are actively competeing. The premiums go up too much. (That said - ALWAYS have 3P liability. BHS Gold if probably the best for that. £80 a year I think?) We strated by putting the equivalent cost in a seperate bank account but having self insured in this way for quite some time now we have stopped even that. If you have the resources to meet a vets bill then you are usually better off keeping your money.

I too am with E&L, now called Emporium.
I have over the past few years made 4 fairly big claims, at one point two were running together, same horse different condition. They paid up for everything.
Im currently in the process of another and they again have paid up the initial costs but have said because no official diagnosis they won’t be paying any further without reviewing the case again. I’m under the impression we have a diagnosis, they have paid for treatment so surely? ?‍♀️
So that’s a bit confusing but it’s my first issue and I’m fairly confident that it’s a misunderstanding and should be easily sorted.
