George is looking really scurfy at the moment and in need of a good bath, so as I've got a couple of days off this week I thought a bath might be in order! As my shampoo has run out I thought I'd ask for some recommendations, he is a chestnut, but it doesn't need to be a shampoo for chestnuts, but just something that will clean him up without losing too much grease.

Thanks

Another vote for tescos own! 58p a litre and works a treat! My boy has really sensitive skin and this has never caused any problems

I like Cowboy Magic's Rosemary shampoo - it's very gentle and has conditioner already in it. Altho my beastie is grey and normally gets attacked with blue shampoo, I use this one for the top of her tail and 'between show' clean ups.

i use tesco or asda own brands and the conditioners for manes and tails, works a treat and never upset either of them, and only costs pence.....

Another vote for SuperPoo! Smells lovely as well!

Although I've also had great results with both the NAF and Carr Day & Martin colour specific shampoos.

i use Tesco own brand (Apple scented!) shampoo and use the matching conditioner for manes and tails.

works as well as all of the hugely expensive horse shampoos i have used.

I'm currently using Somerfield Tea Tree Oil shampoo - something like 89p for a litre!! Have also used Asda TTO shampoo, and Sainsburys, though the latter is more expensive.

Why waste your money on horsey ones?! They're not different to normal shampoo bar the price tag. I don't spend £20 on shampoo for me, so I def don't for my horses!!

Cheap shampoo all the way. The best way is to make sure you have a supply of warm water on hand - in the same way you wouldn't wash your own hair in cold water, don't wash your horse in cold water. The shampoo isn't as effective, doesn't clean as well, and doesn't rinse out properly.

Well .....personally I dont use cheap shampoo on my own hair as it makes me itchy, can't imagine what it would be like to itch all over your body......Iam amazed that washing up liquid doesnt make your horses all itchy flaky and sore, as it is well known for causing dermatitis

Ive been using it for years on all different horses and ive never had one get sore.

I have tried loads of different ones and some of the 'horsey' ones when I first bought my girl and I spoilt her

I thought the latter types didn't really lather up or get her spotless. I find the supermarket own brands very good - especially the Tesco apple scented; it's about 80p. Recently though, I tried a new one from Asda, cant remember make but it's called "Tea Tree Tingle" and that got my piebald cob gleaming....unfortunately it couldn't prevent him rolling a day later

It was about £1.30 for a tall thin bottle.

You must be rinsing really really well then.....read the back of the washing- up-bottle label....it usually states can cause skin irritation, but perhaps its just me being a sensitive princess

.....good reason to get out of the washing up me thinks.....

What sort of washing up liquid do you use that is "well known for causing dermatitis"??! Yes you get sore hands if you do a lot of washing up without gloves on but that's caused by the constant wetting and drying of the skin, not the liquid...

The racehorses at our place are all washed in Fairy Liquid and they look ok! In fact they're cleaner than my boy and most of them are out 24/7 in the mud ATM!
