Best insect repellant / fly spray for horses

Hi all,

It is only 1st February buy my mare is covered in fly bites already. Large, raised scabby bumps all over. She is clearly allergic. Last year I used Neem oil which works, temporarily, but I need to use so much that she ends up looking like I have smothered her in butter. I need an alternative. I was thinking a DEET based product may be more effective. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Hi MDB ! Iv'e got them too, can't believe it, i should be frozen solid here now and it was 21 the other day, i'm dreading the summer, i don't think i will be able to ride much if it doesn't turn frosty soon as nothing will die off, Shadow was covered in midges yesterday too

A spanish lady visited not long back and swears by one that Decathlon do called Emochen or something like that, can't remember exactly but i'm going to try that too, i also like the Shoo Fly People one , it's from Ebay , more natural but not so good in the height of the season

I always used coopers or naf deet power which are good but after getting bad bites (me and horse) I tried power phazer. I was very pleased with it. But I am someone who doesn't mind infusing me and pony in chemicalslol the natural stuff smells better but doesn't work for me, I think with phazer if it doesn't repell it will probably gas the flies to death in toxic fumes by the smell of it! Lol

Tritec - it's the only one I've used (and I've tried most) that makes a really big difference. If I have 4 horses in the field, and one has been treated with Tritec, I can tell which one every time!

Thanks for this Auslander! iv'e just read up on it and it looks good And works well for sweet itch too, definitely going to try some, the flies are hard core little basterds here!!

It's called, Emouchine, Shady - they do two types, a standard fly spray one, and another, in a tin which smells like creosote, which you can dilute and spray on, although it tends to block nozzles, or you can sponge it on neat - which lasts longer, although, if you have a grey then he/she will be covered in black streaks

I use a home made spray with cold tea, spot of dishwash liquid, cider vinegar and 2-30 drops of citronella, tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender, mint (3-4euros each, sold in the Pharmacies/Parapharmacies over here)
