Hi everyone, this is the first thread I have started myself, hopefully you can help with some ideas...

My mare is only 13 but sadly retired from ridden work under vet's advice due to a combination of different issues: KS, problems with hind suspensories/hocks, resulting ulcers that wouldn't completely clear up.

She is really happy to be retired, bless her, and won't be going anywhere!! Love her to bits and happy for her to enjoy her retirement with me for as long as she likes. Luckily I still get to ride friends ' horses at the yard.

I currently have insurance with British Pet Insurance which I have absolutely maxed out (8k approx plus £1000 complementary treatment plus transport to and from vets) trying to get her right. To be fair, they've paid up good as gold and the service has been good.

So now, I am paying £70 a month - ulcers and hindlimbs are of course excluded. Ideally I would like cover for accidents in the field, colic etc but she isn't being ridden.
Touch wood, she's not a colicky or accident prone horse (so far!!)

Are there any cheaper options insurance wise or would you advise to self insure? I don't have loads of savings, but I do have credit cards...! I am just mindful how much vet bills can cost.

Your thoughts??

It’s worth speaking to your insurers about what sort of cover you’re interested in and whether they offer it (and obviously at what cost).

My experience of this particular company has been nothing short of fantastic (for my dog), and I’d be eager to stay with them if I were in your shoes.

SEIB let me put a non veteran on a veteran policy. Accidents, theft, death etc Added tack and public liability and personal accident come included. Costs me about £30 a month.
