Any recomendations? I'm looking for one that isn't ridiculous but will pay out if necessary.

E&L have given me the best quote but someone warned me that they try not to pay up.

Petplan quoted me over £200 more than the other companies. I actually went back in to the details to see if I'd added a 0 to the horses value by mistake!

call NFU they beat the quote that PetPlan gave me by 100's
ive been with them now for approx 8/9 years and they alwasys give me the best quote. They pay out quickly and had no problems when I ended up claiming LOU.

NFU are well priced for me but i dont have lost of use on them. They are very prompt at paying out & iv had no issues with them in the (about) 10yrs iv been with them.

i would not choose e&l, i know someone who worked there she said staff were told not to pay out more than x amount per day, regardless of whether they should legally pay out.

NFU are brilliant, ive claimed on their breakdown, which was problem free

Was that an quote you did with Petplan online? If not then go online and do it - they have changed something with their rates recently and they are cheaper than before. Is annoying me as they are beating our premiums somehow when they used to be much more expensive!!!

Can't point you in our direction as we only deal through brokers anyway but, if NFU and Petplan are not coming up trumps you could try insuremyhorse online quote facility or lloyd and whyte (brokers) horse insurance for quotes!

We changed from petplan to NFU and got much better value

When I lost Lancelot last October,I contacted NFU after reading my policy, which seemed to say I wasnt covered.I was told to put in a claim form anyway.I was also asked a very strange question"Is this what you thought you were insuring for"to which I said no. I Recieved a letter ,which I didnt open for a week or two. (I was too upset)I couldnt face filling in a claim form. It wasnt a claim form, It was a policy doccument. I was angry at first and only after a while did it sink in that all the wording which seemed to exclude my loss had been removed and the accompanying letter appologised for an administrative error and confirmed the new policy was retroactive........ I have had bad experiences in the past with non horsey insurance so I didnt expect much. A loss adjuster telephoned me to discuss the claim. He asked me how much I paid for L,and I confirmed that it was what he was insured for. He asked me to tell him a bit about L and wound up having to listen to all my wonderfull horses exploits, good and bad.He must have been a real horsey type because he understood totaly. I felt he was genuinely shocked at how L died.... Yesterday I recieved a letter with a full settlement of the sum insured, actualy the letter was as nice as the cheque. They said how sorry they were to hear about the sad loss of Lancelot. I felt they understood that this wasnt just an insurance claim to me and that L wasnt just an animal, but my friend. They also pointed out that they could assist with further costs for disposal. I dont think I will,as this was dealt with under the "old pals act" betwean our Huntsman and the Huntsman from the Berks & Bucks Draghounds for a donation to hunt funds. However it was nice of them to offer....So NFU Mutual, thank you so much for your handling of this matter. ..........As a footnote, can I add that I had a call from the local office as well because they were concerned that I might not realise that the settlement ended the policy and could leave my tack uninsured.THANK YOU NFU

I changed to Shearwater this January and had to make the first claim ever for my veteran mare this month and they've been great about it. I went with them because their rates were good and the cover good, and they're very helpful when you ring them. I got a quote from NFU a year or so ago and although they insure everything else that we own, the horse quote was very high.

NFU without a doubt! dont touch e&l with a barge pole! this is speaking from experience, my pony went in for an operation that totaled about £700, we claimed and it took us 4 months with lots of not so nice letters to get the money out of them, they tried evey angle possible to not pay up but didnt have a leg to stand on really. eventually paid up, our excess was £110 but we ended up having to pay £200 as they would only pay up £500, they are dirt cheap but just trouble! have been with nfu for nearly 4 years now, made a small claim last year and they paid straight away, no fuss at all, they are abit pricey but well worth it. my friend had an accident where she fell into a ditch on her horse while riding and she claimed for the vets bills her clothing and her tack etc and the paid for the lot!

AAHHH stay away from E&L insurance!!! They will do everything in their power NOT to pay out. I have seen far too many owners heartbroken because of their decisions...

I've hears E&L are bad. I'm with (wait for it) Julie Andrews Horse Insurance...yes strange i know.. the underwtiterrs are allianz i think and also Scottish Equestrain Insurance Services are in there somewhere too!! I've just put my first claim in for Horsepital over £1000 and so far so good, they can deal direct with vet/horsepital..

I have been with SEIB for about 5 years now and have unfortunatley had to claim for the death of my mare, my gelding having suspensory lig damage and bone spavin and my shetland colic and being hospitalised. I have to say they have been terrific and paid out promptly and for all my claims. I am very impressed and they always seem friendly and helpful when I phone them.

Nearly always been with SE and claimed loads, never had a problem.

The difference between NFU and South Essex is that NFU only pay half for MRI scan so you would have to find about £500 but the pay half of traveling and stabling costs. SE pay all of MRI but no traveling or stabling costs. I have own lorry so SE is better for me,

My vet told me NFU are putting more and more exclusions on policies???

NFU only pay half of livery costs while horse in hospital but they will pay up to 10% of sum insured for travelling costs (i.e. £500 if you are insured for vets fees up to £5000). This includes your travelling costs if you use your own lorry - just record mileage- so I wouldn't rule them out because you have your own transport.
I don't think they are putting more exclusions on policies but now state that any previous conditions will not be covered instead of listing them separately.
I have claimed more times than I care to remember over the last 12 years with NFU (including 2 major claims for surgery last year) and they have been brilliant every time.
Ditto all the above re E&L and barge pole!!

I'm hoping NFU will be good to me again as i'm just about to submit an ongoing claim for my mare. She had a trip to the vets yesterday which cost me nearly £100 transport then however much the vets charge for xray/ultrasound etc to look at her abscess. I have antibiotics for her but if that doesnt clear up she has to go back to vets and be put under general anisthetic(sp?) to get the abscess cut out in the hope that whatever is causing it will be taken out to. Abscess has been a recurring one since Oct
