Best insurance company

They have a terrible reputation for delaying and/or refusing payouts. (Google them).

Given our experience of them, I might as well have written 'E&L' in crayon on one side of a piece of paper, and 'insured as long as you don't claim anything on the other' - this would have saved me time reading endless get out clauses in the small print and I'd still have a document of equal value to the policy document I purchased!

There's a reason they're cheap!

Nfu have been good but r expensive but still have same insurance for my 18 yr old more as wen she was 12 (no exemptions which a lot do once they hit a certain age).
Petplan have good rep but have put a lot of stupId exclusions on my horse.
Considering going with KBIS. Relatively good price and also have fairly good rep I think.

I am a new horse owner, and had the same dilemma. I also heard that E&L where to be avoided, I was told by another on the yard that the local vets would not touch horses insured by them ( not sure if this is true).
In the end I went with KBI, pleased another post suggests them, feel more reassured now.:)

I have used Petplan for my horse and have never had a problem when I have had to claim....but they arent the cheapest (but then I have learnt from car insurance that the cheapest is not the best when I had the misfortune to claim for an accident :().

I would say with E&L, if you look on previous threads some people have had no problems with them. However...when I worked for one of the 'main' equine insurance companies, I noticed a lot of our clients had come from them (i.e. they didn't stay long) and a lot of vets had notices on the invoices that they would not claim direct from E&L and the client would have to settle the bill. Assuming this is because of the poor reputation for paying out

Yes, we experienced this one - the vets asked who were were insured with, we told them E&L and they apologetically explained that we'd have to pay up front, any other company wouldn't have been a problem. Another vet told us they do the same.

Apparently, vets aren't allowed to recommend insurance companies (there are probably rules about kickbacks etc) which if true, ironically, prevents them from steering clients away from companies like E&L. Ask your vet off the record and they will most likely confirm this and tell you to stay away!

Thank you for all your replys, i went with nfu in the end, e&l did come up with a nice monthly premium very cheap but from reading this post and a few archives i can safely say i wouldn't go with them now :)
