any recommendations for trailer only taking one horse? Only problem I have is that I do a lot of miles for work (25,000 ish a year), and I dont get milage money so need something v economical. Or would it just be cheaper to buy a small car and an old 4x4 for towing?

Always heard that the volvo was a great car for towing a horse box, its also economical and one of the safest cars on the road. Ive also seen an audi pull a double horse box easily

I used to tow with an auto volvo estate all the time, the only downside was when you went on mud it got a bit hairy. I now use a defender as the ponies are big ones now, but if I'm going any distance with only one then I ask dad nicely if I can borrow the volvo again, as it's so much better than the defender for comfort and effortless power pulling up hills. the fuel consumptions not too bad either when towing long distance.

Just a quick question, you state that you don't get any mileage money? Is this because you are only travelling to and from work or are you doing work mileage and not paid any pence per mile? If you are using the car work mileage are you not using the Inland Revenue Authorised Mileage rates against your tax?

Most of the larger estate types should be fine - You do need at least a 2 litre engine.

I do use a Nissan Primera - 2.0 turbo diesel - 45 mpg average. I have a small Bateson trailer which weighs 575k and my cob is 480k - I am under 85% weight of the kerb weight with just him so will not take a larger horse or travel two ponies. The little Bateson has 7' head froom and would be fine for a small horse without the partition - it is only rear unload, but I don't have any problems with this.

My car tows very well, but I do take care to try to do mainly A roads and motorways, I drive carefully and so far have not met a hill that gave me a problem, but I take it slowly both up and down.

I do have to take venues into account - but so far have not got stuck. If I do, I am sure I can find a nice person with a 4 x 4 to tow the trailer off the field, then I'll hitch up and stick horse back in.
