One of my yearlings has been purchased by my sponsor, and they want to kit her out with all new rugs etc. I am taking them to Ingatestone tomorrow to pick some bits out for her, and have been looking at their website today to get a rough idea of what they have.

What I want is peoples opinions on the best makes of the following type of rugs;

- Fly rug
- Stable rug (MW)
- MW Turnout
- HW Turnout

Preferably turnouts to have necks.

Depending on build and budget, I would say (top end/middle/lower):

Flyrug: Mark Todd/Amigo mio/Shires

Stable/turnouts: Fal & Horseware / Mark Todd / Weatherbeeta

Those are the makes that I look at.

Considering she is probably going to be outgrowing them pretty quickly, I would go middle/lower end.

What size is she now? I think there is a lot less available in the smaller sizes.

ETA: I find Ingatestone to be quite expensive for most rugs - you would be able to get better deals online.

I have to say I am a big big fan of bucas rugs - they fit all the variations on the yard to the beasts with no shoulders to the chunky WB's.

They do winter turnouts that have huge temp ranges meaning that one rug is a middleweight and heavyweight effectly, my very wimpy beast lasted all winter with just that one (which is unheard of for her) and they have detachable necks that don't actually let all the wind in throught the gaps - becasue there aren't any!
Equally they do stable rugs that have a wicking layer in them - great for if you have a sweaty horse that has been washed off or got caught in a shower.

Reading that back I don't work for bucas - just really rate their rugs.

I also like the horseware (t/o and stable) and Mark Todd (stable!)

There fly rugs are also great - and have a bit of give in them which I love as I have has so many ripped just by the horses rolling and there being no give.

Don't bother with the Amigo Bug Rug as fly rug. I got one recently and it's been trashed TWICE, whilst the Shires Tempest (supposedly the cheaper, inferior one) has been a Godsend. The amigo may as well have been made of tissue! A yearling I imagine will get into scrapes more often, so you need a tougher mesh one, rather than the 'soft' mesh, IMO (and experience!!).

Thank you

She is currently 5'6". Money is no object (don't mean to sound big-headed) but the chap paying for it all just wants the best, and doesn't care that she will outgrow them soon (have tried to explain).

I looked at the MT flyrug and really liked it, so think I will probably suggest that.

I quite like FAL but have never had heavyweight rugs - someone told me that they don't come with leg straps and that they do blow about and move quite a lot. Anyone got any experience of that?

Can you buy the top of the range in 5ft 9 and then let me know in a few months when you want rid of them?

The transporters aren't coming over this week because of the Dublin show so he is still in Ireland.
He is booked on next Tuesdays ferry so another week to wait!
