I am due an free upgrade on my phone at last!
Currently I have a nokia with 5 megapixel camera, and gps. Handy if you want to take a pic of your ned or you get lost hacking. Easy to use. But has sustained numerous drops on the concrete floor. Scratched to bits. clogged with dusty stuff. The buttons don;t all work anymore. This is the 3rd one I have broken, I had it 3 months and the keypad bust (water!) so they sent me another one which bust (in the rain), then this one. My mobile phone company won't insure me anymore!!!
Prior to this one I have pretty much trashed every phone I had, in some horse-related incident or other.

SOOO do I go for a snazzy new touch-screen phone? No keys to get wet. BUT will it stop working properly when it gets scratched?

OR the Samsung Extreme which has no GPS, **** camera but IS waterproof, impact resistant AND has a handy flashlight?

I have a samsung toco light and even though it destoys its self ( back and battery come off) when u drop it mine still works great even though it has a 2cm stratch of the front from when it fell off the quad bike and loads of little scratches from when I have dropped it because i am clumsy. The camera is good and takes ok photos, to get around the destroying itself aspect I usually keep it in an arm or welly strap when I'm at the stables

Talk about dropping mobile phones in stupid places when around horses!

My best ever one was when (a good few years ago now) my mobile phone dropped off of the belt clip it was attached to, straight into the portaloo (and I do mean the actual loo bit, not just the cubicle) at a local horseshow.

The "joke" spread around the show so fast that my friend (who was at the other end of the showground) had heard about this numpty person who'd lost their phone down the loo, even before I got back to confess to her it was me!

I've had a BB curve for the last year. It's been dropped a couple of time but (touch wood) its still in good working order. I always have it in the back pocket of my jeans or if riding I normally put it in my thin body warmer pocket - its slightly too big for my joddy pockets.

Looks like you can get the latest smartphone and put it in this case: T-MOBILE G2 TOUCH OTTERBOX 2600 BLACK RUGGED CASE, or similar. Just use a bluetooth headset while out and about on horsey business - sorted!

iPhone! Love it :) Flat, even in a case, so sits nicely in little jodhpur pocket (don't miss mobile-digging-into-my-hip syndrome!)

I have a sturdy little case for it, it's surviving me dropping it, getting wet in my pocket in the rain, filthy hands on the screen etc really well so far.

Fab for photos, video, easy to plug headphones into to ride to music. Love that I can check the weather, HHO, email etc at the yard :)

iphone, ditto. had mine since Dec and it's in a really good hard rubber case, and is up to the job. i wouldn't say it's waterproof or anything but it's a fantastic phone and i wouldn't be without it now. must admit i do pay for insurance though... ;)

how about the landrover phone? Its quite big and looks a bit rubbish,is basic BUT you can drive over it with a landrover and it works! its fully waterproof and if it does brake for whatever reason you get a replacement regardless of what has happend to it no questions asked, so if you dont mind having an instructable brick that takes pictures its the one lol.

:) :) I did the same at a local horse show, only it was my car keys. They were in my back pocket and I went to the loo, washed my hands and about half an hour later I was blaming my daughter for loosing the car keys. I searched everywhere, realised the only other place I'd been was the loo. Off I went to the portaloo's and sure enough there they were in the bottom of the toilet with something else yuk!!!!!

what ever phone you choose, get a Zagg invisishield for it. I have just got the SE Satio and I'm sure it would already be scratched to buggery if I hadn't put the protective stuff on it, it's amazing!.

I'm watching this thread with interest as my beloved phone is on the way out. Its an 8 year old Nokia, been chewed by nearly every horse I've met, has been run over by a lawnmower, is scratched and discusting, and fantastic. Nothing fazes it. The man in the nokia shop was a little disappointed when I listed my requirements in a replacement (i.e capable of withstanding horse, dog and lawnmower), I think he was expecting me to be impressed by bluetooth et al. I'm off to ebay to try and buy another!

lol Faro, portaloo hell.

My worst phone incident was when I put it in the pocket of my jacket and hung the jacket up beside my old mare's stable. She picked up the coat in her mouth, pulled it into her stable and stamped on it - right on my phone!! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry!!

I did get a case for this phone after orange refused to insure me and it has protected it so far... I'm still not so sure about which one to pick.
Can't have blackberry curve cos the keys are too bobbly - I have a thing about bobbles! Plus my OH has that one and we'd get mixed up!

I agree that the people in phone shops don;t understand horsey needs - they think everyone wants bluetooth, sat nav etc when I'd just like something that doesn't break when it gets wet!!!

Samsung B2100 - waterproof with rubberized casing so can be dropped, kicked etc and still survive. Has a camera/bluetooth etc and slots nicely into my hunt coat!

That sounds familar - left my jacket in a similar place, horse quietly pulled jacket into stable, somehow got mobile out of inside pocket and was found with said mobile in his mouth.

So cracked screen which leaked all the stuff and I had to pay to get fixed as Nokia don't cover screens on their warranty. I tried to say it just happened.

My general advice would be get the best cover you can to protect whatever you end up with.

Ive got the samsung B2100 too. Great phone, easy to use and i have dropped it on concrete and into a full water bucket and it doesnt seem to mind a bit:rolleyes:
Thats why i bought it, because i was constantly dropping them and having to go out and buy a cheap pay as you go to replace it.

mine sounds exactly the same! :P
nice n thin too fits great in joddie pockets:)

Mine is currently the Samsung Tocco (not light version) and it has been brilliant. Dropped too many times to count yet screen is still unscratched.
I'm just changing it (company phone) to the HTC Desire so I can use GPS with OS maps showing bridleways etc.

I have a Samsung B2100 too and its fab. Survived being chewed dropped and being soaked.

Dead easy to use too

NOKIA E63... mine has been stood on by IDXTB, dropped in water and left for a minute before i realised, trampled by foals in field....driven over by tractor and still works perfectly.... lets just say i now only out my phone in a pocket with a zip on it =D
