Hiya

i am looking to trial a bit through the Bit bank and I have been advised a Myler bit.

Please can you recommend me the best Myler bit for helping to encourage a young horse to soften, relax at the poll and accept the bit. not too fussy as he is not a particularly strong horse, so probably one of their snaffle range would be good but there is such a wide range I am having trouble choosing!

Thanks
:)

Off the top of my head, I'd have said a hanging cheek - simply because I know the myler hanging cheek I had really did help Dan soften and drop his head. His was a mullen barrel. Only issue I had was that he mouthed it constantly, but he's like that with most things so think it's just him! :/
And there's no poll pressure with the hanging cheek ;) Had to add it... just because so many people seem to think there is! So tbh, I think of it almost as 'kinder' because it actually lessens pressure in a way.

um.... i'm pretty sure the hanging cheek does exert some poll pressure... :o it must do, because of it's shape/design.

i love all myler snaffles personally. i tried a couple but settled on a low port one, with full cheeks. i don't use it with keepers and Raff isn't a fan of poll pressure. x

clipcloppop - if you've got a hanging cheek, go pop it on a horse. Then pull the reins, as if you were in the saddle. You'll see that the cheeks 'bow' because the action of you pulling backwards only pulls the bit towards to. There is no shank, so it can't rotate. It's rotation of the bit shank that causes poll pressure as the top loop is rotated forwards and thus down. But no shank = no rotation, and so no pressure :)

Hanging cheek & fulmer/full cheek bits (with keepers) tend to be quite liked by horses presumably because they sit quite still in the mouth, and are supported to some extent so don't just sit heavily in the mouth.

Hope that helps! :D

From what I read, to have poll pressure the bit needs to have something protruding below the pivot point (In this case the mouthpiece) and if it doesn't the bit above the main ring acts more like an extension of the cheek piece. Will read that now though :D

like the 'shank' Sol was talking about, i guess... if that's the case... myler need to stop saying that it has poll pressure...! how confusing!

you'd have thought myler would be promoting it correctly, after all, people (me) spend all that money on a bit because they believe the people promoting/making it are experts. and therefore blindly listen to what is said...

:D

It is confusing! But my myler hanging cheek (now on ebay cos I'm sick of listening to Dan crunch on it!) always bowed the cheek pieces with pressure, so definitely no poll pressure from it!

OP, i'd try an 02 mouthpiece, probably full cheek. This is a very nice bit and a lot of horses go well in it.
Otherwise, Sprenger lozenge snaffles seem to be very comfy and easily accepted, ditto some of the Neue Schule ones, and then the Hippus bits for very fussy/sensitive ones.
The Myler, Sprenger and Hippus are the only snaffles I use now.

Thanks Kerilli :)

I did buy the NS starter bit but he just doesn't like it. I will have a look at the 02.

Thanks :)

what about the starter bit with the lozenge? oops eta: just seen someone has mentioned this above, doh! Naughty me for not reading all replies :D
