I have been riding Jazz for nearly 4 years and had him on full loan for most of this time. I posted a while back how much he's worth (http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=249801) but decided that I couldn't really afford to buy him, even though his owner had dropped the price a bit.

Last year (practically a year to the day!) I moved Jazz and my pony from Dorset to a rented field and stables and have had soooo much fun. Done a lot more riding and feel so much happier with them there. Little fat pony is actually becoming fit!!!

Anyway.

On Friday evening, I booked a nearby indoor arena for an hour, to see how Jazz and Thunder would react and so that the ponies could do some jumping and I could do some flatwork with Jazz. I invited Jazzy's owner to come and watch and she said he was looking fab - very pleased with him.

A few weeks ago, Jazz had his vaccination booster but I didn't have his passport (owner kept it which was fine) so owner gave me the passport to get the vaccination signed off. She said that he was to stay in her name but at least I could transport him etc. if I wanted to compete him more easily.

Until.

I went to her house yesterday to drop off my vast collection of myler bits to borrow on her other horse and she said that she is going to give Jazz to me :D :D :D

She said it's an early Christmas present and a thank you for getting her grandson through his science exam (co-incidentally I teach him at work). I really do love Jazz and his owner (now ex-owner :D) said it's so clear that we have got a good relationship and that we trust each other.

She said to change the ownership details in his passport and he's ALL MINE :D

It's suuuuuch a compliment as his ex-owner keeps her horses for life but she says that she knows he'll always have a good home with me and that he's better off in work and well loved and looked after than just as a (very large) field ornament!

I just can't believe it :D

Fab news! However, and obviously be delicate about this, I would get it in writing that he is now yours - it would probably be worth giving her £1 to make the sale legal :)

Enjoy your "new" horse!!!

Congratulations - a great outcome from your loaning experience. Clearly Jazz is a credit to you and I hope you enjoy many more years with your horse! Even though you've had him for a long time, in my experience there is a real difference between loaning and owning, sounds like you'll be a wonderful owner!

Yay!!! :D Ditto the £1...otherwise you can fall into the loophole that you can't sell him, only gift him etc. Not saying you'll ever want to sell him...but, you never know how things can end up so best being safe than sorry. :)

Thanks everyone - 'specially to those who agree he's gorgeous ;)

Tash - it's sooooo common on here to hear of people loaning horses and it going wrong on both sides but this is just a dream come true :)

I've owned horses for years - had Mousey since he was 6 months and he's 20 next year, and have had many horses in between, but this one is very very special to me. We sort of found each other - he's not had the easiest of pasts but we're working through everything and he just wants to be loved :)

I remember your original post about this - it's wonderful news and proof that home really is more important than price to some people. His ex-owner really must know he's happy to have given him to you.

Oh and that photo of him is absolutely stunning! :)

Took Jazzy out for our first hack with him as MY horse. Even though nothing has physically changed, it still felt fantastic :D

We went on a route we haven't done for a while and I tried a new bit on him (full cheek snaffle) and I put the harbridge on him and he went like a dream.

Very lucky owner :D
