There are so many oils, ointments etc that claim to promote healthy hoof growth and also protect against drying out etc but which one does everyone say is the best?

Hoof Moist (NAF), its water based. Avoid things with oil in, they look shiny but block the pores, hooves need to expel as well as take up water to be healthy.
Started using aqueous cream about 3-4 weeks ago (after reading a post by Shysmum I think, on here) and my lad's feet are looking really good at the moment. 99p a pot from Boyes!! Use Effol for shows as well.
Looks like Kevin Bacon is a popular choice! lol I do use it but the ointment is a pain unless the weather is warm so bought the oil one, left it outside my stable and one of the dogs got it, emptying along the way! Expensive mistake! ha ha

I use the liquid Kevin Bacon. I was given a bit to try by a friend and it made a really noticeable difference. My farrier commented on what good shape her feet were in during the long dry spell. He recommends Kevin Bacon too, so was pleased to hear I had tried it independantly and had good results.
Aqueous cream from Tesco / Boots etc, about £2.50 for a pot and then add in some drops of tea tree oil. 1/2 the price of branded products life NAF & Kevin Bacon and works just as well.
After all, thats all these branded products are, just with a fancy label on them.
Kevin Beacon. I used the liquid one and because a little bit goes a long way it lasts a VERY long time! However I buy mine through my farrier making it a little cheaper but well worth the money imo.
aqueous cream - doesn't seal the hooves like pure oils and fats but will moisturise them while still allowing them to be breathable - which is what they were designed to be in the first place!!
With one of mine, I have had years of his feet breaking up. Keeping the balance of moisture is the key with him, as they expand when wet and then contract when they dry out. This causes his feet to crack and break up - it's heartbreaking.
Having used pretty much everything in the 11 years that I have had him, I now make up my own gloop. Melted down lard, good glug of vegetable oil and a good glug of Stockholm Tar all shaken up together and painted on twice daily. His feet now look amazing in comparison to previous years.
AFAIK, Kevin Bacon is animal fat based product anyway, so it is lard with a few other things mixed in to justify the price, IMHO. Mine is just a cheap rip off - but it works - it's not £20 a pot and with the stockholm tar in it, the dogs don't run off with it either!
I use Keratex hoof gel. It prevents expanding and contracting from the wet and dry weather and works like a dream at making feet stronger. Doesn't contain pork fats either which is a bonus if you like animals/are a veggie ;-)
I don't use an oil or grease regularly at all because I'm be too scared of damaging the hooves
I'm similar to Vetwrap, very brittle hooves in summer, so much so that had to go back to front shoes after years barefoot But she isn't keeping the shoes on as her hooves are so brittle and dry, catch 22 Have tried absolutely everything on the market, and yes Kevin Bacon seemed the best but don't think any hoof cream on its' own can make that much of a difference really, if hooves are really 'shelly'...I try to feed for hooves from the inside now, and use Naf Hoof Rub twice a day to encourage hoof growth. Often 'tub' her feet in water and put hoof rub on to try to retain the moisture as they are much better in damp weather.Supahoof by Global Herbs best supplement I've found..My 3 are all kept in same conditions, all natives so have to restrict grazing most of year..2 have lovely hard, brilliant barefoot feet without any hoof creams or supplements...my big mare must have inherited 'shelly' brittle feet They are fine in winter when they must absorb as much moisture as they need.
Thanks for your replies, the lard and aqueous cream sounds really interesting! Think I'm gonna try it as an experiment instead of Kevin Bacon, I'm not going to tell my farrier and lets see if he says anything over the next few months! lol

The only way you are going to affect the quality of a horse's hooves is from the inside! Feed a high forage, low sugar/cereal diet with a proven hoof supplement, dont waste your money on hoof products unless for the show ring.
Our farrier says Kevin Bacon and he sells it a bit cheaper.
My friend (whose lovely mare died last year) has given me lots of stuff and she says she has some Kevin Bacon for me - so I'm going to give it a go. I'm not going to tell the farrier either, so I'll see if he says anything!
