Following a 16 mile round trip to the vets to get some flea treatment and was turned away empty handed, I'm looking for an over the counter product that works.

Any ideas?

Sorry for the terrible grammar, my mind isn't working today!

Fipronil based stuff will work just fine (Frontline, Effipro, Fiprospot etc.) as long as you spray the house as well and the household sprays are all available over the counter (Indorex, RIP Flea etc. not Bob Martin flea bombs/foggers). The non prescription spot-ons on their own are fairly pointless, you need the environmental control.

We would turn a client down if we hadn't examined the pet in the last 12 months.

Turned away because they hadn't seen him for 6 months. He's only 9 months.

Thanks for that info blackcob, that is a great help :)

I've got a dog with fleas (I assume, he has a thick coat but is very itchy), a dog with a tic and a new pony riddled with lice. I just need to catch nits and I can join the itchy infested club too!

Ah so they need a weight - make sure you give him the right product for his weight - you need fipronil as above and aovid bob martin/johnsons like the plague.. The pet shops will give you prescription strength flea control if you know your dogs weight etc. if they are trained to dispense-most pets at home etc should be.

Why would you turn them away if they hadn't been seen within 12 months Blackcob? We wouldn't, we would just sell a POM-VPS or NFA-VPS product instead. Obviously an approximate weight would be required.
For fleas I personally would avoid Fipronil and go for Advantage (Imidacloprid) instead, but maybe that's because of the area I'm in. For ticks you will need to use Fipronil. Agree with the advice to avoid Bob Martin and to also treat the house. Would also add to make sure you treat all cats/dogs in the house with the same product, at the same time.
