Hi,

I am looking for some advice on the best natural pain relief supplement for a pony with arthritis. Since Xmas time she developed boney changes on her knee and also suffers from very mild arthritis in her back legs. She is in her early forties now, but otherwise in perfect health and enjoys life.

Just looking for something that will help with the pain as I have noticed the last few mornings she has been stiffer than normal. Any advice on products you have used with success for similar symptoms would be much appreciated. Would prefer to try something more natural before having her on bute full time.

Thanks

I would recommend that you join the Turmeric user group on Facebook and read the 'files' section for feeding advice and for success tales etc - I have been using Turmeric on all of mine and teh difference is amazing. It's a powerful anti-oxidant and therefore can be very beneficial for arthritis, sarcoids breathing problems and a number of complaints on all animls and humans. You need to feed it with oil (cold pressed) I use micronised linseed and freshly ground black pepper. It sounds bizarre but these make it bio available in the gut. My 21 yr old is moving like a 4 yr old now on the turmeric.

YasandCrystal, how much tumeric do you feed with the micronised linseed? And how much black pepper?

The Facebook page sounds interesting - I'll have a look for it :)

I feed a heaped 30 ml scoop of turmeric and a cup of linseed and 11 or 12 grinds of black pepper. 3 of mine get this once a day and a 4th gets this twice a day (she has aggressive ringbone) I did build up to the heaped scoop I suppose I started with a level 30 ml scoop. The only one of mine that couldn't tolerate it was my veteran 10hh - he got diaorrohea so he now gets his feed soaked in the 'turmeric' water rinsed out from the others feed bowls. It really has made a difference to mine I am so pleased particularly as it is so cheap to buy too. I buy 5kg from Asian Cookshop online for £10.99. Someone said progressive earth do it cheaply too.

click the link in my signature and look under veterinary then A for arthritis, there are some natural healing suggestions there.

me personally a pony of that age, natural products do take a while to work, i would put on to 1 bute or even 1/2 a bute a day, it is just like humans taking an aspirin which old people do, the long term damage from bute is 2-3 a day for years on end.
