Hi everyone. I'm looking for a cheap saddle for my boy until I can get him built up (then I will invest in a nicer saddle). he has an old stifle injury and I want to see how he copes with the work befor buying him anything expensive.
So I have been searching eBay for days and nothing has come up :( I'm looking for a 17-18" med / wide saddle. Not worried about condition as long as its useable.
So if any one knows any good online stores that might stock second hand saddles I would be so grateful!
Thanks a lot
X

I would've thought going through a saddle fitter would be best. They often have second hand stock. At least then you will have it properly fitted which is important, and doubly so if you're building your horse up. Buying off the Internet is so hit and miss you could end up spending a lot to find the correct fit.

Any other fitters in your area?

I bought an adjustable saddle company saddle on eBay, but even that didnt fit, which is why I say online can be an expensive mistake.

What about a new synthetic one?

Agree - find a saddler that does stock 2nd hand and tell them your budget.
You should also be able to part exchange it when you come to buy your new one.
I wouldn't buy off ebay, for reasons mentioned above.

Also watch for broken, twisted trees on any saddle. My friend bought one from a saddle fitter who sold her one with a broken tree, she had no idea it was broken, there was a crease across the seat and you could move it from both ends. The saddle fitter sold it to her like that? Said it was wear. Just because someone has saddles for sale does not mean they are knowledgable. Fit my own saddles and have never had a problem as have more experience at doing this, good saddle shops will let you take them for a trial on second hand ones.

Cheeky maybe but how about getting a fitter out to try a thorowgood then if it fits buy that model secondhand online? They still get the call out and fitting fee

Ebay, but be prepared to make a couple of mistakes and sell them on again.

I had to buy 4 saddles before I found the right one for my daughter's pony but I made a profit on every one I sold back onto ebay!!

I've got a 17 inch medium thorowgood saddle which you can change gullets on. Its black in good condition. Could be posted to you if its any good?

Ring round local tack shops too, some sell saddles second hand, usually a bit more than the same saddle would be on eBay but you can take a template in so its easier to get it right first time.

Look at the Wintec synthetics with the cair system as they have the changeable gullet system and adjustable cair panals, if you get the seat size thats correct to the horse your fitter should be able to do the rest

Absolutely not true. Being able to change the headplate does not make a tree fit every horse, it simply lets you take a given shape of tree and widen or narrow it. There are SO many more variables to saddle fit than tree width and putting the wrong tree on your horse is a fundamental error.

I agree with those who say find a saddle fitter who sells second hand saddles. No matter what, it needs to be fitted properly.
