Best place to buy tumeric & dosage

Hi - I wondered where people source their tumeric from and what dosage you give your dogs?

We are currently in the process of treating my dog for arthritis using NSAIDS. Metacalm made him a wee bit sick (although we now thing that my have been a coincidence and will be trying it again from tomorrow). The alternative, Rimadyl doesn't seem to be making a difference at all though hence why we are trying the metacalm again.

I've got him on that pooch and mutt mobile bones, am trying to arrange some acupuncture and also wanted to try some tumeric but not sure where best to source this and what quality is best (from what I understand it's the ones with the highest % of curcumin that will give the best results???)

Not sure on doses for a dog but I had my warmblood on Tumeric just after he had a cortisone injection - I got a 1kg bag of Tumeric powder from the local grain and health food shop.
 
Just realised who you are lol - Xmas name changes. The little grain and health shop just opposite the Salvation Army Hall in town will have some and can order you a bag and have it in a few days for u. Thats where i got all mine for Arion. You could get it from ebay but I found by the time you pay postage you are just as well getting some from the shop.
 
JingleBell, I dont know who you are or exactly where you are - but I do know Hevs so I have a rough idea!

I buy mine from CeeWoos Chinese cash and carry at the Point in Glasgow (next door to where Derby House used to be). Hubby got me 3 one kilo bags yesterday for £11 (although I think it must be on special cos its usually about £7 for a 1kg bag)
 
Asda etc do kilo bags in the world food aisle. I gave a teaspoon a day.

Maybe try tramadol? Worked wonders on my arthritic dog along with green
lipped mussel powder.
 
Chinese supermarket. I wish we had one near us - not that I feed the dogs turmeric but for all spices and other cooking ingredients they are so much cheaper. Our nearest one is Aberdeen, over an hour away, but even cans of coke are half the price of anywhere else - bizarre!
 
Thanks for all the suggestions!! I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest one but the best quality one. I spotted that progressive earth sell it for horses so I assume at a lower dose it would be suitable for dogs.

Hevs, will have a look at the wee place in Airdrie as it would be handy to get it somewhere local.

CinnamonToast - he's back on the metacalm today albeit at a lower dose and the difference is almost immediate - I just hope that he's not sick again. He's been on glucosamine and green lipped muscle extract for over a year now and it's never made a bit of difference from what I can tell.
 
Fab if the metacam works.

You might want to explore longer term options
eg Trocoxil, a once monthly dose of NSAID. Only issue there is that you can't give some things on top, although you can use in conjunction with tramadol, for example.It also takes weeks to wear off.

The vet seems to think NSAIDS are the long term option - he's 12 now so it's getting a balance between pain relief and causing additional internal damage. We are awaiting further test results though as his liver enzymes were elevated prior to starting on the Metacam.

He's just started on pooch and mutt mobile bones and combined with the tumeric and some acupuncture I'm hoping that this will allow me to stop the NSAIDs if I can.

Not discussed tramadol yet - some people seem to rave about it but a fellow livery who is a vet doesn't like it as she's seen it turn many dogs either loopy or lethargic.
 
Tramadol is a pain killer not a NSAID.it only helps the pain not the inflammation.

One of one has Arthritis and he is on Previcox and I give him pedigree joint sticks ans he is on the Hills JD diet. I also take him to a canine rehab center where he has hydrotherapy.

He is 11 year old and now acts more like a 2 year old.

Yes that's what my vet friend advised about the Tramadol.

Unfortunately, after trying the metacam for the second time it's still giving him an upset tummy so will be back to the vet tomorrow to get something else.

I'm getting more and more nervous about using these NSAIDs due to the possible side effects and the fact that the ones we've tried have either not worked or made him sick!

Off to purchase some tumeric tomorrow that will hopefully help him!
