I have been constantly searching the net to find a job working with horses, driving lorries. I used to work on race yards but after a serious accident im changing my career path slightly and in 2 days time i am taking my HGV C1. I still want to work with racehorses but on the driving side of things. But im struggling to find jobs travelling/driving. Any help appreciated in pointing me in the right direction Thank you :)

Do you mean LGV C because LGV C1 is only up to 7.5 tonnes and most horsebox driving jpbs are in LGV Cs

One more thing and its very important ...

The IOM does not have the driver cpc but to drive any LGV commercially in the UK you will need it

This means you will need to do both lgv initial driver cpc modules 2 and 4 in the UK

My best advice would be to exchange your IOM licence for a UK one then do all 4 driver cpc modules in the UK
Modules are ...
1a theory
1b HPT
2 dcpc theory
3 practical on road drive and reverse
4 practical dcpc

And deffo do C and not C1

Not sure where you are but loads of racing yards have 3.5 tonne lorries now either as a second box or main box. Would suggest just ringing yards or if in Uk look at careers in racing job board and register yourself as looking for work

Perhaps start a transport business?
Friend of mine has done this on a local basis and very busy + enjoys helping a bit on the day is required, so many loyal customers who do local showing also become good company and like a little extra support on the ground.

Thanks for the info and help. The only reason im not doing the cat C is because from my bad accident i had, i cannot use the gear box properly when switching boxes they use the 'slap stick' and as strange is it sounds it puts me in too much pain trying to change the 'box' :( so i have had to just stick with the C1.

I will have to read up on the cpc? as not sure exactly what they are.
And yes most race yards i have worked on have the 3.5tn 2 horse boxes which is why i am going down the driving side of work :)

Hopefully once i have the experience with the C1 etc (hopefully passing my test tomorrow (monday!) i will look into trying the C in the near future. I was just getting tired of being out of work and needed to find a route to take without loosing my mind working in a clothing shop mean time haha.

Also with regards to having the Isle of Man licence i wouldnt of thought that this would effect driving in the UK as my driving licence isnt effected, Nor have those who regulary taken horse boxes across had any problems with the licence side of things. As i know a lot of people have come back to the island to take the HGV here with having an IOM car licence already (to work/drive with horses) It is all new grounds for me which i need to try and work out what is what but hopefully ill get there in the end :)

Sounds a great idea but there isnt the demand for this where i live, and id like to get back to the UK aswell :)

Very few are slapboxes - most are 4 over 4 range changes or straight 6s with splitters and all they require is a flick of a switch with the gear change

In the real world most LGV Cs are now autos and manuals have to be ordered specially !!

I wish you had asked well before starting this because I would have advised you to do LGV C on the UK mainland where you have many choices and be able to do the initial driver cpc

If you are driving an IOM truck with an IOM licence then driver cpc is not required but you will be limited to what you can do in the UK under cabotage rules

Hey Kim, hope you're well. I hadn't realised you'd had a bad accident until ElsieCat told me yesterday. Im glad you finally traced Foxy by the way!

Have you had a look at Yard and Groom? They quite often have jobs that require someone with a HGV. Good luck!

Thanks ROG, i will try and speak to some yards directly and see what i can and cant do.

Hi 'toast' :) haha yeh i had a bad accident breaking in a baby. In all my life i had always been complimented on my 'sticky' bum and how well i can sit on youngsters. Until the day this one got me! But hey ho, hence the reason of going down the driving route :)

Yes i found Foxy after years of googling, one day i had a random txt asking if i used to own a horse called foxy! I thought someone was playing a prank on me because i genuinely thought she had long gone for meat!

I just didnt realise this whole driving side of things was so complicated! Though i have found a travelling head person position at a yard i have been 'following' a while, Just need to sort the whole licence thing out :/
