I need something small and sane to keep my 4yr old company this winter - where's best to look? Would this be something that the ILPH or similar could provide?

Ideally something like a sec a / shetland would be fab - needs to be something hairy and live out!

ILPH all the way. I have a companion. I paid a £50 rehoming fee and have advice on hand whenever neede. Plus if my situation changes she can go back with no worries as to 'where will she go'. Plus by taking a resue you are freeing up space for them to do more good work.

HAPPA - I got my 11hh companion from them and they were great and he is perfect! Would recommend them if your looking.

Ted is 11hh and some Dartmoor X so lives out 24/7, 365 days a year with no rugs and when mine comes in at night, Ted lives in the open yard with a small stable open for shelter if needed.

Takes his job of companion very seriously bless him! Doesn't eat much either!! Although would like to eat more

!

ETS - Costs £10/year to HAPPA.

How pernickity are charities about where their horses go? Reason I ask is that my horses rotate with cattle so it's barbed wire fencing round the perimiter but I put electric fencing on the inside of it so that they don't go near it. I think / thought that this was a no-no for them?

I though they would be very pernickity, however when our local field officer came out he was so down to earth. I am sure barbed wire with electric on the inside would be fine.

I got "checked" first and had to show where horses would live - on a farm thats easier said than done, as mine rotate as well so it was fairly vague! Think it was more to see I had shelter and enough grazing land and to meet me. Mine live with barbed wire and there were no questions asked - I think if your putting up electric fence then there would certainly not be a problem from my experience.

I expect most charities would be happy to hear from you!

Yea I would too reccomend a charity, you are giving a home to a horse who may not have had the best stat in life and are freeing up space in the centre.

Try the bluecross and redwings too.

As long as the barbed wire is taught and not sagging and fenced correctly so not causing a hazard then the rspca don't refuse a home, especially for ponies as they struggle to find homes, as long as everything else is also in order, i.e regular farrier, vet, suitable grazing, knowledge etc etc

take your pic, there's plenty to chose from!!!

Given your location, I would get on a shetty website and contact breeders near you. Most struggle to rehome ex-broodmares, so if you are not bothered about having someone in her twilight years thats where I would start!
