Hi,

In your opinion, where's the best place to sell a saddle?

I have one that's a well known brand and one that's a bit more specialist. Both used (and loved!) but in good condition.

Any words of wisdom of how's best to sell them and where?

I have both sold and bought saddles on "dressage on a budget". It's free to post so worth a try, I have also sold one from an add in the local saddlery shop.

I sold a gp barnsby and that took about 3 months, the albion SLK took less than 3 weeks, (I was prepared to undercut everyone by £100) and I had an unbranded Jumping saddle that took quite a while.

My friend sold her saddle to a saddler, though I'm not sure if many saddlers buy now.

I bought a saddle from ebay which ended up not fitting either of mine, so put it on preloved and got 2 cheeky offers and one asking for a trial period (er, no), and put it back on ebay for the same price and relisted it twice with no joy. Relented and took it to our local saddler who will sell it for 30% commission. She valued it at £400 more than I paid for it and expects it to go pretty quickly - wish I'd taken it there in the first place!!

Hi, I've sold 2 saddles on eBay, achieving a good price and one I made money on. The key is to write a good advert, I thought about what attracted me to a saddle and went from there. That said, this isnt the best time to sell a saddle they will start moving a bit more in the spring. Good luck x

Thanks for your replies!

clairew, when did yours go off to the saddlers? Will you have it back if it doesn't sell in a few months?

xxMozlarxx, so did you add in comments about what sort of horse it was suitable for etc. or things like how comfy it was?

I took mine in to the saddler on Saturday, and think I'll leave it there until it sells. As they take it out on fittings they think it could suit, apparently they go out a fair bit so the chance of it selling is pretty good.

You could try taking it to a tack shop which has a second hand section? I see you're in staffordshire - there's a really good one in eccleshall (eccleshall saddlery & animal feeds) which has a big second hand department which I love to go and look around, there are lots of saddles there and I think it's quite successful. Not sure how much of a percentage they take but it seems to be popular, might be worth giving them a ring?

Anyone sold on Horsequest? I have read far too many horror stories on here to comtemplate selling on eBay ( and I am a big eBay fan).

Hi...all of that..comfy,Stitching sound, flocking good no lumps all that kind of stuff. I also like to say they've been oiled and treated with grand prix gloss. a few nice pics with a nice background to show your quality and they can trust. Etc etc .x

I've sold and bought saddles off eBay,as well as all manner of other things, use it all the time, never had a problem that couldntnbe sorted either as a buyer or seller, as long as you know exactly what your doing you are well protected.

One is a brown, Barnsby GP, wide to extra wide (would suit cob or hunter type perfectly), 17.5 inch.

The other is a black, Nick Dolman GP, wide, 18 inch. It has serge panels and is considered as a 'holistic' saddle (along the lines of Barry Swain and Kay Humphries).

For the right people they'd be great. They have always been well maintained (reflocked etc.) and looked after.

I will give the shop at Eccleshall a call and see how much they charge.

They do have sentimental value, so I don't want to sell them for a lot less than they're worth but they may as well go to be used and enjoyed!

They're great tips thank you xxMozlarxx ! They have genuinely been very well looked after but you don't always remember to say all of the details in an advert do you so that's a great help!

Any experiences of Horsequest as Luci07 asked? (I didn't even know you could sell saddles on there!)

Interesting thread as I have two lovely saddles to sell and no idea how to go about it. They have both never been used, they were replaced after a burglary following an insurance claim but neither of the cobs were ridden again afterwards due to health problems.

I approached the Saddler that fitted them thinking he would perhaps be interested in buying them back but was offered only a quarter of their cost. Tbh I would rather keep them than take that offer.

When buying saddles do people actually buy them without trying them on their horses ?. I was thinking of popping them on to preloved as I have heard a few stories about selling on ebay that frankly puts me off.

I have just sold one via Facebook! The county I live in has a Horse Riders group where people put ads for all manner of things. I responded to a Wanted ad and have just parted company with a saddle that I should have sold years ago.

Good job done!

Ah, I hadn't thought about facebook!! That's interesting.

How many photos do people normally take of saddles for an advert? Shall I take one from all angles and under the flaps etc.?

I think in the first place you just need one clear photo but with others available to back it up to prospective purchasers once you have some interest. I ended up posting 11 photos on my profile.

Selling anywhere is a risk on both sides, best to use paypal so you are both protected. I've bought unseen having already tried the particular saddle..the thing with eBay is if it's not as described you are protected, as a seller ad long as you really describe accurately you should be fine.
