Where abouts in Herefordshire are you? North Herefordshire has Croft Wood, Bircher Common and Shobdon wood which are all very good for off road hacking.

There's also a nice farm ride starting at*Canyon Pyon, I've never done the whole ride but I believe it goes all the way to Weobley.

I get muddled up between the two

I'm pretty sure it's Norton Canon though. There are quite a lot of gates which is the down side to it.

We are due to move down to the area in the next few weeks - pretty close to Haugh woods. Can you tell me if there are a lot of mountain bikers in there, or if there are tracks for just horses. Likely to want to go there at a weekend, so it would be good to know what to expect!

Oooh whereabouts are you moving too? We hack from home to Haugh Woods. there's a few mountain bikers but not hordes and they are always considerate. Horses are supposed to keep to the main tracks and are prohibited from some altogether so there are no Horses Only tracks. You are more likely to find families walking with kids and dogs on a sunny weekend - other times you wont see a soul. You can ride around for ages and the further you are away from the carparks then the less likely you are to see anyone.

Moving to Bartestree, so it will be a longish hack to Haugh woods I think , or we can box up there.... Thanks for info re mountain bikers, sounds a good place to go. We are moving from Berkshire from pretty good hacking, so hoping we can find enough places to hack out when we move - although we will have our own land as well, so can ride over that some of the time. Thanks for the local knowledge anyway - will be strange to move somewhere where we dont know anyone!, at least to start with! Where are you based?

I think you need a permit for there
No I don't think so. Used to need a permit for the Wyre Forest, which is very busy, but don't need one now for riding, although they have hiked the charge for parking a lorry/trailer.

I don't recall Mortimer Forest needing a permit as it is nowhere near as busy as Wyre Forest and is different ground conditions.

Sorry, got it wrong. Not a permit, a KEY!
