Frenchie's foot has not healed as quickly as had been hoped and is still a bit gunky :( (not unsurprising given the injury), but I am really anxious to get her back out as being in the box is not doing her arthritis any good. I therefore need something that is hard wearing and waterproof. The hard wearing part is essential as she has trashed every homemade poultice so far  and also given the nature of the hole it is never going to heal and as such will be abscess prone in the future. However if at all possible not bank-breaking (I know, I'm asking a lot :( )

TIA :)

If you can, melt the hoof putty so it is liquid, then pour into the hole rather than rolling into a ball or get your farrier to do it for you. My boy's is still growing out but the putty has not moved, excellent stuff as long as everything is squeeky clean otherwise it just stops any drainage and it all builds up again - good luck !! (Abscess' have been the bain of my life in the last 4 months)

Do NOT put putty in the hole if it's still got anything coming out of it! however melting it and pouring it in is an excellent idea once there's nothing left to come out.

No boot with stand up to having a shod foot in it. Even the barefoot hoof boots like Old Mac or Cavallo will wear through quickly. Get the shoe off and use boots to ride too if required.

No boot will be water proof but the foot getting wet is fine, as long as it's kept fairly clean.

The best boots to keep the poultice on are trainer-like barefoot hoof boots such as cavallo or boa boots. Most need to be bought in pairs but the Easyboot Trail boot can be bought singely or you might find singles on ebay or similar. You will need a couple of sizes bigger to fit a poultice on the foot too (will also stop rubbing(

i used a rubber boot from shires for my horse when he had an abcess. worked really well unless ground very muddy. only cost around £17 too.

sorry not sure how to link but if you google 'shires poultice boot' you should find it on the shires site. i was able to turn my horse out with it so it was a real help. it is blue and black.
