i know the basic products that are well known and used such as kevin bacon, but was just wondering if there were any other externally used products on the market that also helped foot health. anything that help strengthen grow or nourish the hoof would be helpful. can be either for frog use or hoof use. not to include IODINE. yes iodine she is incredibly allergic. her feet just loose shoes weekly and are so brittle especially in the dry weather.

Feeding is going to get better gains then stuff you paint on the outside.
However red horse products are pretty much universally recommended if you do need stuff for said outside.

Effol hoof grease. Like manicure cuticle oil, but for hooves.

I’ve tried Keratex but IMO it’s basically like nail strengthener - a coat of protective varnish over the hoof/nail, but it doesn’t do much to promote healthy growth (someone please correct me if they know otherwise)

yes, we’ve boosted her feed recently to help her feet as advised by the feed specialist. she was left in a field for 2 years without any attention to her feet so we’re just trying to really to pick up from there. they were in a state when i got her and although they are looking much better now i was just wondering if there was anything else i could use. will have a look at red horse products now thankyou!

Good hooves only become good from from the correct diet painting grease and potions on them won't do anything, infact a lot of them dry the feet because they prevent moisture getting in, in dry weather just run the hose over them every few days it will stop them drying out.

You need to feed a good all round balancer or a all round vitamin and mineral supplement aimed for hooves, progressive earth or equimins are good.

I found that Effol made a noticeable difference to hoof health in dry weather - though it was on a horse who had good hooves to start with and Effol was recommended by the farrier to help with dryness & maintaining condition. I’ll question the farrier’s wisdom next time I see him! ?

Agreed - I feed a small amount daily as a hoof & hair supplement.

It made enough of a difference for my farrier to ask what I was feeding when I first put them on it. Only downside is that ponies arrive with me having neat manes and all look like punks within a few weeks, but may just be my poor grooming :D

You can indeed get it to put on your muesli but just to warn you that it is often used in people for its laxative effects so it might depend if you need help in that department or not!

This is sounding better and better! ?

(Good info for anyone else who’s also following the menopause thread, wants to deal with the weakening hair and nails and also the ... lack of regularity ... which can come at that time of life)

I’m sorry, OP, for derailing your thread. I hope you don’t mind too much.
