Assuan- cant quote as on phone.

Imports don't usually bump insurance up for older people, but massively did as somone under 25! :)

I have a Landrover Defender 110 which tows really well - however don't expect any luxuries! OH said it's best to buy the ones with the fewest gadgets as there's less to go wrong!
Diesel is fairly pricey and I haven't the foggiest about insurance (leave all that to my man!)
BUT - I like it, it's sturdy, it tows well and I don't feel bad about getting mud all over the inside of it!
We do have a small car we use for longer journeys to try and keep fuel costs down.

Your OH sounds like mine, he was worried about the Disco's electric windows incase they get stuck. Just cant afford a Defender right now, for xmas he has a money box with a 90 on the front with "Bens Defender Fund" on it lol.

isuzu trooper all the way. we have a SWB W reg one done 90K now and i love it. It is the 3 litre version and we had isuzu put new injectors in it free of charge as soon as we brought it last year as this was the issue with them. It tows my new ifor lovely with 2 big horses in it. good in snow. citation model is good as has heated seats etc.

You 'bought' it or you 'brought' it? I would presume you mean the former not the latter.

If you want cheap and reliable go for a fourtrack - if you can get one - or an Izusu trooper, 3.1 diesel, not the 3.0ltr as they had a few major problems. Most landrovers I looked at were rustbuckets and I'm sorry but I would never, ever buy another british built car again. I'd avoid Nissans too, they are gutless wonders for towing and rustbuckets too!! Shoguns are a decent car if you can afford the insurance.

If it has the word Rover on it anywhere I would walk away as well, British = crap = Rover = rip off spares and serviceing, I have had 2 Terrano's and both are good on fuel and tow fine, but I am thinking of changing and looking at either a newer Terrano or a Shogun.

Good luck.

anything that is a pick up will be cheap on tax as its classed as commercial but they kain you on fuel. My ex's L200 was LUSH! but rediculous on fuel!
Im 20 and have a 1995 disco ES tdi 300. 300 is the best model, has mod cons, electric windows and leather seats etc. Its ok on fuel. not so good for me as i do lots of running around. i pay about £100 a month of insurance. It lovely to tow with. its auto so dead easy! I feel safe towing in it and it gives the horses a nice ride. Back in july i did 100 miles of towing in one day on £40 of fuel! prety bloomin good! Its just over 200 a year to tax. I paid £1100 for it and have been very very lucky! its been very well looked after. It has been SORN since september and i have just had it mot'ed. I have had a brand new boot floor put in and the odds and ends it needed to pass such as bulbs etc all for £345! all down to the people you know! I love my disco :-D
But i will be getting rid of it next year for something smaller and newer such as a santa fe.

I recently bought a Ford Maverick (M reg, 2.7TD) and have been very pleased with it so far. It has a 2.8 tonne towing capacity, so more than capable of pulling two TBs around. Haven't towed with it yet, but hoping to get on and do my trailer test soon.

I paid £800 for the car a couple of months ago with 12 months MOT on it. Touch wood nothing gone wrong so far! Putting about £45 petrol in per week, and about £60 a month fully comp on insurance (I am 23, although have clean driving license and a few years no claims).

I was intending on getting a Nissan Terrano, but have been assured that the Maverick is basically a terrano with a different badge on it. The engine is the same engine used by many of the london 'black cabs', my OHs black cab has over 500,000 miles on his engine, so hoping that my maverick at 140,000 has many more miles left to go!!

i have a diahatsu fourtrak, i spend about £20 a week on diesal... disco's arnt that great, rot and no end of engine problems.. my fourtrak is 23 yrs old and gone straight through every mot.. never been welded..engine is sound...been a great truck in the snow, lost count of the amount of landrovers i have pulled out...mate turned his disco over in the snow, i offroad mine too...

what she said ^^ :D

our fourtrak is P reg, and we paid £2k for it 2 years ago.
it's cost me about a third of what our last disco cost us in servicing in the same period of time (same reg of vehicle!)
it's also more economical on the fuel - partly because it's not permanent 4WD, and partly because it's lighter and has a more modern diesel engine (compared to the same age disco).
and so far it's proven better in the snow - rarely needing 4wd. only thing it doesn't have is difflock which would come in useful in really tough conditions.
our discos were nice to drive, but both basically died of rust, rust, and more rust!!

Ring a few insurance companies and get quotes on various makes and models as the price difference even for old vehicles of similar types and cc can differ vastly.

I've gone from a Fourtrak, to a Pajero and back to a Fourtrak. The Pajero cost twice the price to insure even though it was the same age as the 4trak (presumably because it was an import)

I know there are many many fans of Shoguns/Pajeros' but I'm not one of them!

My bleedin Paj lasted just 4 months. I think I drove it 12 times! And then it blew up on the motorway the first time I towed with it over 40mph

I know it's luck of the draw, and buying a 2nd hand/oldish vehicle is always risky, but this car went so wrong I had to sell it for scrap price.

Now back to a Fourtrak. Had my last one 8yrs. Hope this one lasts as long!
