Hi everyone,

My gelding is high withered and narrow. I wondered if you could share some suggestions for best rug brands/ranges/types/styles for Thoroughbreds?

I'm looking to buy him some new rugs and wondered if you have any recommendations or advice on what rugs fit best (lesser wither pressure would be great).

Also I would be interested to know how many rug types your Thoroughbreds use throughout the year? (both for turnout and stable use). And do you prefer neck covers, or go without?

Thanks in advance.

My high withered TB fits most rugs. She’s been my easiest to rug but I do like the horsewear rugs, especially Rambo. I’ve just bought a weathabeeta comfitech half neck for one of my others though and it’s fab.
I put a neck on her for turnout and her winter rug is a 400g but we don’t have a field shelter and it’s persistent wind and rain up here and now she’s old I keep them turned out for as long as I can so that’s why I use such a heavy turnout. Her stable rug is a 100g. I have a heavier one but rarely use it.

Weatherbeeta comfitec for my previous TBs. Although none of them had shark fin withers.

I love rugs and tend to have a change in most weights.

Last TB had
Fly sheet
Cooler
Fleece
LW stable rug
MW stable rug
Rain sheets no necks x 2
50gm no neck
100gm removable neck
MW 200-250gm 2 with removable necks and one full neck
HW 350gm combo

Always had warm horses and mainly lived in MWs

I think weatherbeeta fit most horses well and I buy detachable necks although I don't use them that often they are handy, I prefer using liners under my rugs as I can wash them weekly and you don't need loads of turnouts, you can just put a thicker liner underneath and when they come in I just remove the turnout and put a stable rug on top, most brands fit all my rugs and you only really need to attach them at the back they never move.

I quite like high/half necks for high withers, I've got Rhino wugs - can't stretch to Rambos - and some Weatherbeetas, older Takas.

This tb doesn't actually have that high withers but the horse he inherited from did.

I always had falpro rugs but this last couple of years I have had a variety of rugs, bought a JHL rug and I love it on my thoroughbred nice and deep, large tail flap, low straps so rug doesn’t blow up in the wind large neck which hasn’t rubbed main anywhere, my horse wasn’t clipped this year and this rug didn’t rub her shoulders either definiely would have another. He has a comfy fit weatherbeeta too and that’s fits well to, have changed from tbars at the front to buckles and clip fasteners as they stay in place better.

Horseware are the best for fit and not slipping & rubbing. I find the Amigo 1200D (available in Wug shape now too ) are much better value than Rambo & Rhino which don't last like they used to so not worth the money anymore IMO. The 600d aren't worth bothering with unless you replace your rugs every year or two.
