Best Rug for a my 4 year old in Highlands 24/7 turnout

Not sure of make but I would suggest layering rugs and making sure its got a really good (attached) hood.

I find with my lot that different thicknesses of stable rugs/ourdoor rugs works better and gives you more options.

2 good rugs I have are a Mark todd and a bulldog that have both served my ID x and my TB very well!

I read it as 'rug for my 4yr old Highland' and though 'what the hell does she need a rug for a highland pony for?!'

I have to say, the rug I'm most impressed with so far has been my very cheap rug off ebay - the Axiom rug (can only get them from the seller on ebay) £45 for a HW full neck :D I've got the 1800denier full neck and it's great. VERY tough (lasted a winter in a field full of rug rippers), very waterproof (he's was always dry and warm inside), strong fittings, nice and deep (no miniskirts) and generous round the shoulder for wider horse, plus it has a lovely big tent tailflap (a huge selling point for me).

They're my new favorite rug :D mostly due to the price :o and now I have 3 in various different weights (impressive for the self confessed meanie who until them owned one rug for 4 horses and just told them to stop being so pathetic if they were cold or wet :o )

They come up true to size and are generous around the chest, so if he's a 6'3 normally, get a 6'3.

Bear in mind the P&P is £12! Non negotiable. They arrive quickly though and it's still cheaper than most rugs.

I have an axiom stable rug I really like so I might try a turnout!

OP, -am in Scotland too and the wet it the worst thing. last year's winter was actually easier on them as it was drier. I really rate the premier equine heavy weight rugs, the fit is really good and they stay waterproof in unending wet weather. best to go for something 1200D plus as anything else IME will leak. I also have an amigo HW which is a lightish 300g which is waterproof too.

I live in the Shetland Isles and have two tbx 's who live out 24/7 (with full access to their stable) and i swear by Premier Equine rugs.

They are snug and stay put/ do not blow open in windy weather- they are nice, deep rugs, the tail flaps stay put and the neck covers are elasticated at the top to prevent draughts.

There is little I hate more than seeing horses turned out in wet windy weather with their rugs flapping open and rear ends fully exposed to the wind and rain.

I also use Horseware and Weatherbeeta but by far the best for up here are PE rugs.

Thanks for all the info, certainly the Axioms seem worth a punt but cant find a HW 6'3" with a neck cover but I may get the medium weight anyway, and will have to look up 'Premier Equine' not heard of them. Was considering the Amigo range anyway so glad that gets a vote, but the Rambo/ Rhino are just too far out of my price range in the £150 -£220 league . What do you think of Fal Pro s?

We use FAL rugs and really rate them. Have never had one leak yet. They are also very breathable so fine for inside and out.

I also would give a vote to Amigo. It's what I use for my highland in the worst of the weather (she has no shelter at all) and am currently collecting up some for my Newfie. The thoroughbreds etc up here, all have them and they all came through last winter without a fault.

I have never had much luck with the Axioms - mine always seem to spring a leak! Do use them as underugs though as they're so cheap.

Horseware Rambo and Rhino (the newer Amigos are good too)
and Premier Equine for my heavier horses :)

Well, my Irish sports horse is out 24/7. Last winter he wore a Weatherbeeta Orican combo and he was chaser clipped. When it was really really cold I layered a Weatherbeeta Landa combo under it or his lightweight amigo. For 2 months he had over 2 feet of snow to live in. He was just fine and never felt cold or dropped any weight. In fact he loved the snow!! We do have field shelters but they never really used them. They use them more in summer to escape the flies!

I also have a Rambo Wug which is good but I don't like the half neck (it came with him). Premier equine rugs look good - but I've stuck with Weatherbeeta as you can always pick them up cheaply on equestrian clearance. I would avoid the Taka ones though as they have a horrible lining.
