Right...boyfriend has asked me for a list for Christmas & birthday...horsey things are not allowed on the list...so I need your help!

I have tried many coats over the years and would really like a REALLY good new one..that actually does the job..one that is water/shower/splash proof to a point (think heavyweight turnout!) comfortable, wearable & warm...MUST be able to move when wearing it...breathable-so I don't melt..mainly for yard work but that could be ridden in too. Colours/black no prob as have separate hi viz jacket/stripes etc so black is fine..

Not a lover of the traditional wax tho i have several of various lengths,Toggi & Drizabone, but they smell & are just cold & uncomfortable.
I'm fed up with putting my toggi down filled faux suede coat in the wash nearly daily or plucking hay out if it.. my other coats, a TAGG was great the first seaon but soon became lightweight after a few choice hooves planted in puddles left me drenched in seconds..or constantly being damp legged in the TAGG if lifting a wet haynet as its quite long covering good top of legs...or if they mess about going into their boxes when you're stood there holding 5 (under the drip usually-they're not silly!)
So ....needs to be comfortable WARM splash proof and not restricting...oh and something i won't feel like a scruff in, so if at all possible a little chic would not go a miss...god knows its hard enough to look fully human some days when you're smothered in it!..Any suggestions of whats good & what isn't would be very much appreciated xxx

You might do well to broaden your search to non-equestrian stores. I would suggest maybe going to an outdoors type shop (like Cotswold or whatever) and tell them what you want- they'll have things designed for really active people that are waterproof and warm.

Can't think of the names of outdoor chains aside from that but worth a go. Prob better to go in store than online because then you can be very specific about what you want and the staff should accommodate you. Slightly biased but my bro used to work for Cotswold and they seem to go through a lot of training for this kind of thing- I'm sure it's the same in other outdoorsy chain stores as well.

PM me if you want!! I work in web sales for a Outdoor Company so can send you my link! All my stable coats are from work, last and this winter I am wearing Jack Wolfskin coat that are fantastic keep me warm, fully waterproof and look really smart. I can do a special internet price and free delivery next day!

I've got a Puffa - not one of the big quilted jobs which make you look like the Michelin man, but a breathable riding coat which is fab. Puffa's website is 'coming soon' but this is the same one:

(no connection to that eBay auction, by the way!)

Very comfortable, has coped with everything the north coast of Scotland weather has thrown at it so far and my previous Puffa lasted 25 years (it's actually still going, but it's been relegated to wood-staining coat!).

If you want the absolute business in breathable waterproof get a paramo coat, made by nickwax, they are really breathable so you won't get sweaty, they aren't cold to the touch or rustly like many waterproofs and last much longer too. They are also quite warm for the weight and absolutely 100% waterproof. Have a look on their website for an explanation of how they work. I bought one and have worn it everyday to the stables since it arrived :o

They are lovely and soft to the touch.

If you can't stretch the budget then look for goretex and look at good quality hiking/climbing/mountain biking gear particularly berghaus, north face, mountain hardware, montaine, tog 24 etc.

I wouldn't go for a three in one coat with a fleece liner, there are much better options out there.

1. You will end up wearing two coats because you can't be bothered to keep zipping them together again
2. There are far better insulators than fleece that are lighter weight and easier to care for such as primaloft or analogy insulator or real down
3. horse hair, hay, shavings etc really stick to fleece so you will look like you slept in the stable.
4. Fleece sticks to other layers of clothing making you uncomfy if you don't match it to the right mid layer.

There are Mark Todd ones which are quite popular, i've got one, and lots of instructors i know have them.

V. warm as the lining if snuggly, and it's got inside zipped pockets It's not full length, but can get *a little* stuffy when riding.
Comes in some nice colours too, but i've got the plain navy one!
Your bf will probabally realise it's horsey, but it is a nice, practical jacket.

WOW! thank you all soooo much...I'm still trawling thru the links! I think I'm going to narrow down to three and let him surprise me..and ight sneak some Dubarry boots on just incase:-)) Thank you for the online offer aswell...:-)
I have the three in one Tagg and I do like it but not as much as i want to...and wouldn't recommend it so you are exactly right esp about the hassle of removing lining etc...fleece is a nighmare especially if it gets hay on the inside...I have really long hair down to my waist which is semi wavy/curly and very fine but lots of it...so the Tagg jacket has too many bits to get caught on, from velcro, poppers & tags its actually quite a pain(literally-I've had to cut my way free before!!)even if i tie my hair up or plait it..so yes, frequently rock the windswept stable dwelling look! Not by choice & not good! I'm going to have some fun chosing now..have permission from bf to have warm stables clothes on birthday list...as long as they don't have leg straps or crossed surcingles...the cheek!:-)
