Best saddle for big shouldered horse.

Hi all!

I need to buy a new saddle for my 4yr old as already outgrown her current one. She is quite a slim built 15.3 but has HUGE shoulders !!!

I know she has lots of filling and growing to do , so wondering what saddles you have all found best , so I can then get the best saddler with those saddles in ! Preferably one with an adjustable gullet.

Dare I say that huge shoulders, the type that affect saddle fit, are so often postural rather than conformational. In a young horse it may be a stage you go through, inevitably with some, but focusing on changing that posture, and movement patterns, is ideal.

Just fitting the shoulders somewhat ignores what the rest of the back needs, especially as you say she's a slim build, though I understand why the shoulders feel key! I used to fit AH and do still advise on them and adjust them but I've moved to different options gradually over the last few years.

Mine is driving bred, big shoulders but also a big active hind end, I did at one point wonder if anything other than harness would fit, be acceptable to him, and stay in place. The answer for him seems to have been an Erreplus with their SL system.

I think you need to find a good fitter that stocks multiple brands. Try as many as you need and pay attention to how your horse responds to them and feels, something may be a good fit but if your horse isn't happy then it isn't the one.
