Our pony desperately needs a new saddle - I have been told to look out for a Thorowgood T4 but they seem to be like hen's teeth. I wondered about a treeless one but don't think I can afford one (budget up to £200).

Any recommendations for a flat backed fattie of a 10.2hh welshie? Riders are 4 and 7.

Thank you!

What about the thorowgood pony club saddle? I have one for my welshie and i know a few others who also have them for theirs.

Another vote for a Thorowgood Pony club saddle. I had one on my very wide Welsh cross and only sold it before xmas for £80 in great condition. So well within your budget...

Not sure the TG comes small enough? With a pony that size I doubt you'd get more than a 14" on it, perhaps you'll even need smaller. Often Welshies are better fitted with a smaller saddle than they can actually take, to help stop the saddle running up the neck.

Shetland Showing Tack have good pad saddles that are vaguely near your budget otherwise you might just have to search for used - look for something short in the seat and flat in the tree, though watch out for it being too low at the back if the panels are very thin.

Second the Fylde. I have Fylde Haydens on both my little ponies. I got one of them second hand for £350 and it is immaculate, you may find one with more wear a little cheaper. They also seem to help the kids find a nice position and the suede version helps a little with stickability too.

If you can stretch your budget a little to get one they do hold their value and you will get your money back on it when you no longer need it. Try Horsegossip, there's always a few for sale on there :)

thanks for all your replies - i bought a 15" black leather one locally which puts the rider in a much better position but it's really too big a seat size for the pony - he needs a 14" max. Going to have a look at the Fyldes (and maybe sell all the saddles I seem to have collected to raise some extra funds!!).

14" ones seem to be hard to come by though - guess they get passed on with the pony...

Thanks again
