Best/safest way to do my hair for riding?

FOr everyday, I just put mine in a ponytail or tie back with a couple of the covered bands.
For competition I use a bun ring and it looks like this:

When my hair was uber long and also now (got it all lopped off :( )I just shove it in a pony tail or gather it in my hands and put the hair band around it.
For competitions, I would always put it in a bun, and secure a hair net around it.

My hair used to be nearly 2foot long before I chopped it off into a bob  It used to annoy me so much, I rarely had it down! I used to put it in a pony tail and then on the last thread through I would only pull half way through, so, it was essentially folded in 3, make sure you do it tightly or it'll fall out! Others probably have better methods but that was mine :)

I have never had hair quite as long - mid waist was probably the longest and now its climbing upto boob height. I twist my hair loosely as if putting into a bun and then use a covered bungee or similiar to hold it. I actually put a net on when riding to stop all the annoying bits escaping and for shows, go the whole hog with double netting, plaiting and rolling it and for stressage - another net with a bow on it!

Put it this way, people at the yard always do a double take when they see me with my hair actually down!

Thanks for the replies everyone - I like the idea of bunching my plaits like a ponytail fir riding, then take it out after, and I still have my trademark plaits!

Have always had v long hair, till I cut it shoulder length 6 years ago, and I looked awful :( now it's finally getting back to a length I like!

i would say just do it in a pony tail or like the plait on the link or get your hair cut a bit
or
leave them if nobody at your RS has said anything then there isnt anything wrong its yur choice tbh

I'm so glad to see this thread: I nearly started the same one myself a few days ago! I have very fine but long hair (almost at my waist now) and I usually just single plait or ponytail it, sometimes with a low bun. I'd never ever thought about scalping before... even the word makes my skin scrawl... so it'll be in a plaited bun every time from now on. Thanks!

While freak accidents are possible, I think this hair-thing sometimes gets blown way out of proportion...

I put my (waist-length, but fine) hair in a single braid for daily riding---have done so all my life, and never had a comment. Agree with speedi-bun idea of folding and putting bands around, if you're worried. For shows, I have this thing:

You just clip it around your hair, and stuff the hair into the net that's hidden under the bow:

INSTABUN!! Very handy, and I'm pretty sure they make cheapo every-day versions of it too.
