The commentators at the trot up mentioned that the horse that won the best shod horse award, Angus Smales' ESI Phoenix, is shod in pads.

The recipient of the Worshipful Company of Farriers Best Shod Horse Award, judged by Chris McCabe and presented by Lieutenant Colonel Mark Houghton, was Stephen Hill, farrier to Angus Smales' ESI Pheonix

Interesting. What are these pads? They are more breathable than conventional pads. I wonder why the horse needs them?

My big horse had these - he was prone to going footsore if the ground was a bit hard. Plus his feet were on the flat side so extra support without having bar shoes on.

mine had foam filler in between the pad and the sole. They were stupidly expensive though so we took them off when he stopped jumping.

Yep they are 3D hoofcare ones with dental foam. To help improve the heel and shape of the foot as well.

Look up The Equine Documentalist and Progressive Equine Services and see them using very similar techniques, especially to be able to wedge to get correct palmar angles/HPA without compromise. They stimulate and support the whole of the back of the hoof, unlike "open heel shoes" as they call them which, they argue, cause prolapse of the heels.

Shod for the job it is doing. My show hunter won the best shod for my farrier at the final Royal Show at Stoneleigh, it was a very special day for the farrier and a very high achievement.
My driving donkey took the best shod feet two years running at the Donkey Breed Society championship show. My farrier is still proud to display his brass plaques.

What does this mean?
It seems like something that would be handy to spot in future!

The hind foot has obvious contraction in the frogs, ie narrow, deep sulcuses, and heels, and the forefoot shoe shape implies similar contraction. Have a look at the two FB pages I mentioned above, or just read up about underrun or contracted heels/hooves, hoof function etc.
