As the weather has been unreal here recently (we've hit 34 degrees for a few days!), I'm realising that cowboy boots are currently too hot to ride in, even early hours in the morning.

I'm looking at Ariat Terrain Zip or the Ariat Telluride models and just wondered if anyone rides in them? It's only for riding on the trails and obviously ive got long jeans on and a western saddle so nothing gets pinched by stirrup leathers etc, so short boots will work. Any other suggestions as Ariats are the only ones I can find currently online.

I'd ideally like zip or velcro fastening as laces drive me a bit mad.

I've got some shires paddock boots but they're currently locked in the back of an enormous shipping container which won't be unpacked for at least another 6 weeks, so I cant get to them and I've limited other shoes that are unpacked (as in flip flops and sketchers trainers and muckers that obviously wont work for riding in ).

Thanks x

I have the lace up terrains as my main winter boot, not for this weather imo!

I ride in riding jeans and short jod boots in summer

lace up terrains are more comfy for me - I've just bought the zip version and am not really loving them, ariats are the most comfortable though as I've tried the Harry Hall ones too and they were awful for my feet.

That's really helpful to know, maybe I need to look at the lace up ones instead.

I wonder if that is a known fault as I did read a review where someone else had the same issue. That's annoying, I think that would drive me a bit mad.

it drove me crazy I have to say. I love Ariat boots because they fit me so well I don't even have to run them in but I'd never have a pair with a zip again!

Used to have mountain horse riding trainers brilliant don't know if they still do them. Would buy them again like a shot if they do.

I have a pair of Tuffa Endurance trainers that I've had for about eight years and are still going. To be fair, I don't have my own horse and have ridden between once a month and once a week in the time I've owned them, and I only use them in the summer, so they've not exactly had a hard life! They are nice and comfortable, though, and not too hot.

Same as Cinders, I have a pair of jod boots and chaps from Mountain Horse, but on trying to look up the name etc for you, they don't seem to be available anymore. Probably 8-10 years since I got them. The boots have the standard MH sole, but a fabric top, elasticated front, black silver and red colour. Breathable fabric, lighter than the boots, but not trainer-light. Chaps are leather on the inner calf, but breathable fabric outer and front. Zip at the back. Great for summer, as they let air in, but still support. I am lazy, and leave the chaps attached to the boots, and just slip my feet in and do up the zip (zips from heel up ) as they have got a little looser over the years, but haven't gone baggy. I know that isn't really that helpful, but I am sure there must be other places out there, especially Endurance/TREK type stockists, that cater for hot, as opposed to cold, which seems to be more where MH is at the moment.

Thanks I googled but dont be able to find the mountain horse ones, perhaps they are indeed no longer made, shame as I like Mountain Horse products.

These look really nice, thanks, they would only be for summer use so they may work really well.

I use the Ariat Telluride boots with laces all year round. Got them to do Trec where you need to be able to run/ride jump on and off etc and now use them for every thing (retired fro showing/dressage!). A friend has the zip ones and she said they took a long time to wear them is and were quite uncomfortable at the front where the zip is against your foot.

I know you said you didn't like laces but I've got some woof wear lace up walking / riding boots for TREC & they're fab for both riding & walking in during summer. I literally wear them all day when I compete & they tend to fare well even when it's boiling hot. They aren't as durable as some of the more expensive ones but that's my only complaint

Funny I thought it was just the Ariat boots I purchased. I got the conniston pro boots and they keep doing it all the time. I wish they didn’t as I love the boots but it drives me nuts riding.

I’ve got laced Ariat Tellurides for summer wear riding and yard work. Just bought a new pair. I tried on the zipped terrains and although they fitted perfectly I went for the laced pair again as they’re more adjustable and I can fit my arch supports in. I’ve got zipped Devon pros and not had an issue with the zip. I had some Tuffa zipped boots and the zips always came undone, when I bought a new pair both the zips popped. I also had to wear a gel insole as they’re really hard and have little cushioning.

Thanks for this, So it seems the Tuffa boots also have the zip issue, I wondered if they might be hard inside as they have a protective toe area and I found some Dickies boots I had were like this and made my feet ache, Ive got really high arches too so tend to wear an arch support.

Thanks everyone, this has been so helpful, it would seem the Ariat laced boots are going to be best for what I want and seem they are going to be the most durable.

Another one who has issues with the zips sliding down on the Ariat boots. You can get zips that stop that with a little locking tab on the pull, I really don't know why Ariat don't use those. The boots would be awesome then. Mine are years old but I keep checking the newer models and the zip is the same so would still slide.
