Can anyone please recommend a fly repellent spray bandage or gel type ointment or whatever that I can put on what was a minor field wound that is now a gaping mouth wound filled with feffin flies. My poor little donkey is being such a patient soul while I clean and pack it with sudocream but even after that the flies are very quickly getting through it and working away at the wound.

I have tried spraying it over with Boots spray plaster after cleaning and treating but that doesn't help at all. Google shows me loads of different ones but I have no idea what if any will work. Help please folks!

Thank you Auslander I shall go and google that now to see can I get some in Ireland or shipped to Ireland. Do you use just that or put anything on the wound first please?

I'd only use it on minor scrapes and cuts, that just need covering, rather than treating. I just give the area a clean, let it dry, then spray the woundplast on

Silver spray to seal it and summer fly cream round it, its antiseptic and usually wards them off ?
I've not found silver spray to deter flies if you've a lot of them around!

No I have tried the silver spray - far too many flies and as it is just in the crease of his back leg it almost opens up the moment I have sprayed and woosh in the little germ carrying spawn of the devil go.

Filtabac cream is excellent as it forms a crust to protect the wound from flies and dust.

Now that might do the trick Northern Hare.

If not I shall have to resort to a bandage for a few days, but I am very reluctant as I would like the air to get to it as much as possible. (y)

Poor wee donk. I use Carr Day and Martin wound cream on any wounds my sweetitch horse inflicts on himself. It is a very thick paste with a pleasant but strong smell which I suspect flies won’t care for and forms a waterproof but breathable barrier. It really seems to help wounds heal very quickly. I’m in Ireland and bought it at my local feed merchant.

The summer fly cream is good keeps them away ?

Thanks Barton Bounty but I have almost every make of fly cream known to man as I have a sweet itch mare and this little donkey is also borderline allergic to almost everything in the summer. I have tried putting most of them over the sudocream and around the wound but I do not want to put any specific fly gel or cream actually on/in the wound, I think the ingredients of a fly cream directly into the wound could be problematic. A healing salve that included some sort of gentle fly repellent might be Ok, but any I have here have not worked so far.

Aww crap! So sorry . Poor pony . My friend did put this stuff on an open wound and it healed it ?think it was battles .

what about putting a light netting over the leg? Like a stocking so they cant land on it? I made my boy some out of mosquito net

Filtabac sounds perfect. Dries to a firmish crust unlike sudocrem (which melts in warmth)

And I must be the most stupid woman in Ireland today, (well most days probably?) I have just realised among all the many and varied potions and lotions I actually have a brand new unopened tube of Fitabac down the yard in my medicine chest.

Thanks all, Fitabac it is for now and I shall probably also get some of Carr Day and Martin wound cream as suggested by Quigleyand me. If I can just stop it getting any worse until the weather changes and the flies sod off that will be something.

It depends on the type of wound really. Silver spray is perfect for wounds that are weeping and over very mobile areas, Kruuse is good for dryer wounds that are on less mobile areas. ?

My horse gets minor skin scrapes / self harms on fly bites Etc. If I apply silver spray flies still sit on wound. Wondering if Kruuse stop this? If it has a thicker stiffer shell?

Either Kruus Wound Plast or Silver Spray.
We're in perfect agreement. I went up to do ward rounds this afternoon with Woundplast in one hand and silver spray in the other!

One of the mares now looks like Ziggy Stardust, as she decided to run for her life just as I started spraying. I ran too...

BB hates aerosol sprays lol not bad with others

Summer fly cream isn't just to repel flies, it is for wounds too. I have used it lavishly on sheep that have had bad flystrike and have large raw patches. Works brilliantly.
I agree. Used it on our ram that had a mysterious cut appear across the back of his neck. (Think he maybe had a run in with a bramble or something, but it looked like a slice!).
Twinned blue spray (Terramycin) and yellow fly cream which equaled a icky green colour but it kept the flies off and healed up really quickly!
