Pony has a new dressage saddle so *needs* new stirrups. I was thinkig the Jin ones as would like something lightweight.

Currently use the Sprenger bow balance ones for jumping and the system4 ones for dressage saddles for other horses but thinking now about trying something else? I like the idea of cheese grater types (hence looking at the Jin ones) but willing to look at other makes/models.

Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

I wanted to get lightweight ones - having taken the sprengers off one of my other saddles I just noticed how heavy they were and thought lightweight ones would be better. I am not keen on the composite ones after reading Kerilli's post about them and seeing the pictures so looking for suggestions.

Yes they are heavy I agree. I've considered the pfiff ones, fairly cheap but there are more expensive out there... I'm not keen on cheesegrater ones just in case my foot gets stuck in there and I like to move the balls of feet a little bit.

The only thing I worry about with plastic is that all plastic becomes brittle over time and I'd hate for one to crack at the worst moment possible!

Exactly - it has been known to happen, I have been searching through some threads on here and saw some pictures Kerilli posted - scary.

Sometimes, you just shouldn't compromise. :)

It's desirable to try and loose a bit of weight here and there from tack. The average saddle and it's gubbins can easy weigh 10kgs or maybe a bit more depending on saddle.

It's quite a lot, then you add on dead sheep, gel pads, other bits n bobs and you could hit 12kgs!

You can actually get lightweight saddles weighing less that 5kgs, but you pay the price and I'm talking £1,800 perhaps? You could try a cheap Wintec for about £500 but I wouldn't touch one of those with a bargepole to be frank.

So, honestly, some proper iron stirrups is not going make a lot of difference. It's not worth changing for composites as they are not safe.

I just wanted to add... I had a bespoke saddle made that is just under 6 kgs. Expensive but the best saddle I ever had.

If you want details, PM me.

just to say that I have the Jin stirrups for my DR saddle (used to be on my jump one but got some different ones which are amazing but would stand out a lot and a bit pointless for DR in my opinion) and they are lovely! I was really surprised at just how lightweight and grippy they are! Highly recommend them :D

Thanks all - the jin ones are the same price as sprengers so if they are better I will get them. I am far too lazy to switch stirrups between saddles which is what I am currently doing.

KatB mentioned some stirrups she had I must trawl through and find her post too.
