Springy has always had good feet but a few small cracks have appeared around the nail holes, I assume that this changeable weather (sodden fields one day and baking hot the next) has something to do with it. The cronet bands look healthy (not flaky or cracked there) and her coat is nice and shiny. She is on Happy Hoof and Equivite and 24 hour turnout.

So I have coneucrescine, but not sure it will help with cracks. Is the Kvin Bacon as good as it's made out to be? Or Keratex, but which one?!

I have just returned from working on a racing yard, and they swear by stockholm tar and baby oil mixed together. Well I thought I will give it a go (normally lose a shoe each every two weeks!!!) well one month on and no lost shoes and feet are getting stronger, no cracks (usually all the time) and clenches not moved. I know it is old fashioned but who cares if it stinks, it seems to work. (used an old cornucrescene bottle and poured the mixtures into it). Hope this helps!! (NB tried keretex, farriers formula, cornucrescene, kevin bacon, etc. etc and did not work??)

but do you mean CLO put directly onto the hoof?

Can't for the life of me remember the manufacturer's name but their products come in bright red tubs and tubes. Something and Something. They do a range of intensive hoof moisturisers and I used to have a Haflinger who had laminitis 3 years before I got him (total mismanagement) and his front feet were always a bit ropey. He was on Farriers to tackle the structure of the hoof from the inside and this intensive moisturiser rubbed well in every day to tackle it from the outside and it made a dramatic difference. Keratex is supposed to be totally brilliant but if you don't get the preparation right, it is an expensive waste of time. You have to have the hoof itself scrubbed spotlessly clean and then allowed to become bone dry WITHOUT picking up any more dirt. Then you paint on the Keratex - taking care to only get it where the instructions say to paint it - then THAT has to get bone dry. To do it properly could easily take an hour or more but would give you hooves like steel. To do it sloppily doesn't make any difference at all as the liquid doesn't bind with the hoof wall. PS: don't have the Haffie any more after a very serious disagreement and 3 days on a spinal board with an almost broken neck! Good luck!

Send an e mail to keratex explaining about your problems, include routine, bedding, turnout ect. They will send you what will be the best soloution for your horses feet and also how the hoof works. I did and it was very interesting reading.

I have noticed this year that my boys feet have hardly any cracks - they are barefoot. Put this down to the black sunflower seeds and linseed they have been having.

I also find hypona hoof dressing helps keep the feet in good condition and put this on a couple of times a week when the weather is really dry.

Cornucrescine improved Star's feet immensley (?sp). They look far healthier now. that's the stuff in the red tubs. I just used the original stuff in the tub.

I've been using Keratex Hoof Hardener on mine who has just gone barefoot (ready for 9-12 months grass rest), her feet are breaking up REALLY badly. Every time I stick the Keratex on the next day another bit seems to break off! I have to say I use it like regular hoof oil and whack it on whenever without cleaning the hooves (but I don't put it on when they're mucky) but I've been using it every few days for about 3-4 weeks now and no change. At £25 a go I think I'm going to change to something else... will be interested to see what everyone else recommends!

My boy suffers from cracks and I swear by feeding topspec and using cornescresin, they have improved so so much since!!

I used Ketatex Hoof Moisturiser last year when Baron got cracked feet and it worked wonders. Have started using it this year before cracks appeared and so far his feet are still in perfect condition. It lasts for ages and you only need to apply it a few times a week.

Used to use a water based hoof moisturiser, with not much success, now this yr am using Kevin Bacon's hoof moisturiser with good results - Will see if it continues if the weather dries up thow....
