My mare normally has really good feet and usually has to be trimmed every 4 weeks and farrier takes tonnes of foot off. She's been a bit 'strange' behind for a couple of weeks so has been off work whilst waiting for the back lady ( usually it's an si joint stiffness which a bit of pulling and pushing solves) but the farrier today says she's worn her feet down and they are shorter than they've ever been... what's the best supplement for horn growth as I'd rather not shoe unless it's necessary ( she can put on and inch of hoof in 4 weeks in the summer) .

She gets hi if lite and baileys local balancer and as much good quality haylege as she can stuff down her neck.( she drops weight over the winter but I avaoid hard feed as she heats up and gets silly)

I use the Pro Hoof from Progressive Earth which seems good, although my oldie will no longer eat it since being on Prascend. I have my youngster on it. However I'd be suspicious of something else physical going on if she's recently changed how are feet are wearing especially at this time of year when most horses are doing less outdoor work than in summer.

We have good grass and she puts foot on more in summer and her work load has been increased over the last couple of months...

Is it because she has been loading them differently if stiff behind? Is she sore on her feet or does the farrier just think they look short?

supplement wise, forageplus, prohoof (pro_earth), equivita, equimins adv complete - the last is a bit low in magnesium so I add a bit extra. and micronised linseed.

I use Progressive Earth but any of the ones Ester mentioned would work. I'd be adding salt and linseed as well. I also add vitamin e over the winter and make sure his feed contains a reasonable amount of protein. When I got him he hadnt been trimmed for 6 months as he apparently didnt grow any hoof. He does now!

Too much sugar from the haylage and/or slight inflammation maybe? My mare usually puts down loads of hoof too, but you could see she barely put down any during the trim cycle where she had slight inflammation in her fronts. Since it's been treated and resolved, she put down more than ever during her last 5 week cycle!

I took my mare out for a hack the other day that involved mostly walking until she reached 'the' field when she decided that approaching 17 is spring chicken still and as I was gathering up my reins having shut the gate, hoolied off up the field. Cheeky whatsit. I should have pulled her up there and then and have been chastising myself ever since.

For the last week she has been the same as your mare. Worn her fronts quite heavily - very noticeable after we went for a 5 mile walk on the roads (fields frozen solid). She is showing odd lateral-medial rotation on both, too. She does roadwork at least once a week, so it was not as though it was a shock to her system.

Two days ago I noticed she was very slightly lame on the right rein. Having spent last year growing some sidebone and being lame on the left rein, it is a bit of a bummer. I think she has pulled a bum muscle/tweaked the SI region as she is also slightly dragging the near hind. Am seeing if it settles down this week, otherwise it's the vet. Again.

I use equimins with a tablespoon extra of Mg, and micronised linseed.
