As title really - looking to buy pony who reacts very badly to any creepy crawlie bites and midges, an all over rug as even with Shires Tempest or Rambo Bug Buster, they are crawling up inside and eating the poor buggar alive!

At the moment, as much as it pains me to say it, I'm looking at the cheapest rug but what ever will be the most efficient and most comfortable for her to wear when she is out.....

Please share your views!!

Thank you in advance :)

The only rug that stops midges biting them is the Boett, but it is not a cheap rug. You might also look at the Snuggy rugs which I think are cheaper.

Thank you - I have priced up the Snuggy at around £150 + p&p Her bites are so big and they really irritate her understandably so I'm looking at this an investment!

love the rambo sweet itch hoody, and more importantly my mare is happy in it (which is a good thing as she wears it pretty much 24/7 from march to end oct). It is into its 3rd summer now and has only needed the tail flap sewing back on, everything else lasting well - through lots of rolling and trips through the washing machine!
Personally didn't get on with the snuggy hoods ones, but other people might like them. If you want a long 6'6'' one then let me know! If you want v close fitting then they are prob the best, but I found them a bit of a pita! (which is odd as I totally love her turnout hoody from them!).

Personally found the snuggy best better design than the boett although that is a good rug.
The dearer rugs are harder to put on than the cheaper versions like the Rambo however they offer better protection hence they are more difficult to put on!
They have to be a tight fit otherwise the bugs still get through. All depends how badly your horse reacts, mine had bad sweatitch so it was important.

I have a turn out too which I'm having a zip put in as a bit too much to ask of a 4year old to keep pulling it on & off over her head!

Without having had to buy one before I have no idea which is best so thank you for the suggestion!

Do those with the pull on types, find your horses get used to it? I currently have a Snuggy turn out hood which, although she is ok about it being pulled over her head, is not keen at it coming off over her hears as therre isn't much give in the material!

The bugs really do like the taste of her unfortunately so I'm also trying to prevent the situation getting worse for her :(

The hood part of the snuggy hoods one has a zip so it's very easy to put on. I turn it upside down so there's only a small bit of material to go over the head and then swivel it round, which also makes sure the mane is laid neatly one side . The body part is the same, you can put it on upside down and then swing it round. Another horse here has a boett rug and it's lucky it's a very patient and obliging horse!

Another vote for the Horseware sweet itch rug. My little pony has it really bad down to we have to ride him out in a ridding fly rug when the flys get really bad. I find it has worked really well for me and he has a mane and tail now instead of a bog brush :)

Ive got a boett for my old boy and it does keep him much happier. As others have said though, pulling on and off over the head might upset some horses, but mine isnt fussed and lets me do it loose in the field. It's lasted 3 summers of wear between march and October with lots of washing machine trips. Deffo recommended :)

Thank you all for your replies - all very helpful.

My only concern re the Rambo SI is the lack of belly cover as they seem to like eating her tummy and towards her 'girly bits'.
I like the idea of the Snuggy being able to put it on like that - I think pony would be much happier with that. I think after a few attempts at pulling a whole rug on/off her head she would seriously go off the wholre idea (it doesn't take much to annoy her!)

Anyone tried the Pagony rug? I think I read that is easier to put on than the Boett and as she isn't a severe SI sufferere it maybe another option

Thanks again!

Agree with you re lack of girly bits cover of the rambo one, I put this on her midine, teats and top of her back legs http://www.fanevalleystores.com/product/109080/Net-Tex-Itch-Stop-Salve-for-Horses-600ml

The snuggy hoods one can come with an udder cover, which is why we ordered them, however we just can't get them fitting right and they wind up as poo catchers, utterly useless.

Thanks for the tip - looks like a very good option as sometime she can be crawling under there with the horrible little urchins - eugh!

That was what I was worried about! he he

My TB has a tendancy to be headshy but he got used to a boett type rug within a week. Now I can take it on and off with very little fuss as long as he's held or tied up.

I have tried him in a boett and a pagony. The pagony wasn't as good, (hence the price I guess). But I actually find he is much better suited to this one:

Cheaper than the boett and much deeper which as he has a big shoulder made a huge difference to him.

Another recommendation for the Boett, amazing rug! Haven't tried the snuggy one so can't comment on that but the Boett is definitely worth the money, mine has had his for years and it still looks new - also comes with loads of spare material so if you have a rug destroyer you can fix it yourself easily. He's so much happier now he isn't getting eaten by nasty bugs all day long, they seem to love him.

Mine is the spookiest horse in the world and didn't like the boett at first (when I first bought it I didn't realise you had to put it over the head, or I would have stayed well clear as he is such a drama queen!) but within a few days he was putting his head into it for me and wasn't the slightest bit bothered about it.
The only thing is, it can be staticy! - but i've found that if you take it off every night so that it doesn't build up too long, combined with running anti-static wipes over it does really help with this.

I would definitely recommend the Horseware Rambo Sweetitch Hoody... a bit expensive but worth every penny. My horses sweet itch hasn't returned ever since using it and flies never get inside!! :)

I have a rambo sweetitch hoody now in it's 6th summer. I also have a pagony. I like both. I would say the rambo is a much harder wearing fabric.
I like the rambo going over her ears, protects her poll which is an itchy area for her. The pagony started to rub her legs earlier this year when she still had her winter fluff although it didn't rub last year when she had her summer coat.

I have a 5'9 rambo for sale that is brand new that I bought last year. It's been tried on but my mare really needs a 6' so have decided to rehome it.
