I'm in a position where I can now breed from one of my mares. I have a young 4 year old Thoroughbred, whom I think would benefit from being in foal.

So, I was thinking using a native stallion - but I'm quite tall (5'8") so will need the foal to grow upwards of 15.2 (ideally around 16hh)

Any suggestions on stallions/breeds? And if you have any, please post photos!

If you want to be fairly confident of a bigger horse then welsh D is probably the better bet, just be sure to research the lines as some of them are a bit sharp

Otherwise maybe an over height connie or Newfie ?

can't do photos, but Irish Draft or a full up Connemara. I've got one of each, and they're both lovely, easy to handle and very amiable to break. The TB x Connemara is by Boden Park Finnard and is about 16hh. The draft cross is by Touchstone Silver Laughton and is 16,2 at 3 and 8 months. I've got a smaller TB x Connie too.

connie all the way, they make by far the best crosses and quite alot of top eventing ponies are connies or connie crosses so they can be very talented and if you get a full up 14.2 stallion although it wont sire a huge foal it should be big enough for you, you wont get a native that is over 15.2 other than maybe a welsh but personally i wouldnt go for a welsh tb cross :)

TB X Welshes are nice - tend do jump well.. I have a TB X Knabstrupper - jumps like a stag, safe in traffic but super sharp i must admit.. great fun!

TB X Warmblood's are nice too :) but if its a native you want, section D all the way :)

Welsh Sec C x TB ^_^!

This is my Welshie x TB boy - jumped up to 1.20m and does EM dressage. Love him to bits ^_^

Old dear is id x tb and a lovely cross it is. Great attitude, athletic, only retired at 30 and still field sound. Indestructable and brave but very sweet matured, compact but not small and quite athletic. Hunted, show jumped, hacked, lovely dressage test, teenagers best mate all rounder type.

Welsh or a full up connemara. I have been lucky enough to ride a couple of tb x connies and they are the most amazing little horses!

Does anyone have any stallion suggestions?

I haven't ruled out any breed. I've had a TB x WB that I loved dearly, but ideally want something more "sturdy" but still have the talent to do a bit of everything.

I've been looking at Trevoulter Barton Stud's Gorsfraith Brenin - I know one of his progeny who is incredibly talented. But at only 14.2hh, I'm not sure the foal will get big enough?

They also have a stunning RID stallion, Coilldarach Scirocco.

Highland, my girl has the best of both breeds, she is 15.2 with good bone, forward going but completely reliable out hacking and does a nice dressage test. She also jumps like a stag, but we don't do that cause I'm scared lol

Depend if you mind having a grey as a lot of Connie stallions will always throw grey foals It is the very best native cross though if you can find a good non grey one
Welsh d on a tb mare is lovely too but funnily enough not the other way round in my experience
Lovely horse QUEEN OF CADENCE

Thankyou. I shall start looking at connemara stallions :-)

The mare is grey so Ill always have a 50% chance of a grey foal regardless. It doesn't bother me as its one of my favourite colours!

Connemara. But my thoroughbred mare was suited perfectly at 15.3 good bone and conformation and the stud is very successful in the UK today (not owned by me now). Lecarrow King would, in my opinion, be an excellent choice. Avatar is his first colt.

'Nother vote for CB... I have a CB x TB and she is the bees knees... If you want to see pics of an ace CB x TB youngster have a look at the News page of Thomsonbrook CBs .. for pics of Jean's p/b youngstock winning a 1st premium in the BEF Futurity. Jean's CB stallion is very special too..

One word of caution .. they are exceptionally intelligent................. ;)

Definitely connie x tb. Mines a star in everyway. But, if its to keep & height is important, its easier & cheaper to buy. My mare is by a tb stallion & out of an overheight connie mare, however she is obviously a throwback to smaller ponies on dams side, & only made 14.2. Handy for me as I was a kid when I got her, but at 5'10 myself if I went to the trouble of breeding my own next horse I'd want to be certain it would make the height. However, I'm definitely a fan of connie x tbs.
