Best TB crosses?

Tee Hee - you are so right about the intelligence. That yearling of Jean's is a superb example.

I have two Welsh D x tb from same dam and sire which are circa 15.1hh and 14.2hh (ish). One is a stocky thing (15.1) and one is skinny and short, literally looks like a mini tb and I am quickly losing hope of her ever filling out!
And one who is about 16.1 out of different dam and sire who is chunkier.

Although all a range of colours/personalities/build... they all have very individual but lovely characters. I love the cross.
 
One of the smartest crosses I've seen was a Welsh D/ TB mix. She was the absolute stamp of a perfect WH horse/ JRN eventer- short coupled, slightly stockier, but with a huge engine and enough TB to make her that bit finer and lighter. Stunning little mare (153cm bang on).

Or a TB/ Connemara mix always seems to work well.
 
I have a Connie cross tb he is so good huge jump very good at dressage and also won showing at County level he is so lovely i just bought another one! Connie all the way!! My one is out off castle squire xx
 
I have a TB/ Welsh Sec D but the other way around to yours, the dam was a Sec d the sire a thoroughbred. She is stunning but is very sharp even now at rising 20 she can be a handful. I did once consider buying a TB/ID, fantastic cross and a really beautiful animal. Unfortunately at 16.3hh she was to big for my stables! Good luck with whatever you go with, nothing like breeding your own but I wouldn't do it again!!:D

I would go for a cob cross tb, or maybe clydesdale. Or welsh. Or Dales.
 
This is her I've only had her just under a year but she has proved herself so far to be the best horse I've ever had, she is laid back but when you need the energy it's there. So a definite vote for connie cross!

He is VERY nice - I remember seeing him at grading in 2010! He'll put a bit more substance and a nice, sensible outlook on your TB mare - although you could expect to get something at LEAST 16.1hh

I've backed (and reschooled) a number of TBxD's - they can be a bit sharp and have a bit of 'attitude'. TBxConnemara is a nice cross too - but you might not get the height!

My mare is the same cross (but I don't have records of which way round the dam and sire were) and is a similar age - she's also sharp but a real fun ride, we are ladies of a certain age behaving like teenagers :D
 
I think I've got to rule out Connemara's to be completely honest as I won't get the height I need, and I know I won't be able to sell! Also my mare is already very sharp aand highly strung, so unless the stallion is very laid back, I think I'll also dismiss D's.

So, I'm looking along the lines of CB's (JanetGeorge - any recommendations?) and also ID's. Any photos do post!

I had a connie xtb pony and she was fab at everything but only 13.3 hh but I nearly bought another connie x tb who was 16hh and again fab at everything a couple of years back. They are hardy but have a lot of intelligence. It was funny as although they were different sizes they had all the same physical traits.

:D You don't want to ask ME about recommendations for Cleveland Bays! The first horse I bought in the UK was a 4 year old Cleveland Bay x Anglo-Arab! He was a handsome horse - and that is about the ONLY good thing you could say about him. The girl who helped me back him had a CBxTB that she evented quite successfully - on its good days!! I'm not a great fan of the breed!

IDs - now - a totally different kettle of fish! The RID x TB (assuming the TB mare has a REASONABLE temperament) is close to perfect. The TB on the RID mare can be even better - as the mare teaches manners as well as contributing to the genetic mix.

The one you've seen is very nice indeed. If you want to use AI, the other one who is VERY special is Avanti Amorous Archie - fab mover, outstanding temperament - and excellent semen! I've used him for 4 years now and had some stunnning foals!
 
Haven't read the whole thread but I was musing over putting my TB mare to Avanti Amorous Archie (RID) but unfortunately she had to be pts so never did:(

However i'd done a lot of 'stallion shopping' before hand and had heard nothing but good things about Archie, if you email them they'll happily send you a DVD with some videos of him and he is goooorgeous:o also apparently has a fab temperament which people say he often passes on:) http://www.avantistud.com/

As for considering breeds to cross with a TB the one concern I had with putting a TB to an ID to get a sporty type was that I thought the ID may make it a bit heavy to make a nice mover, but after searching through many ID TB crosses I changed my mind:D
 
Just to through in the mix I have a fab PRExTB mare (out of a TB mare) and I have seen some other cracking ones. She is sane, sensible, easily trainable and has great athleticism from both the breeds (she extends and collects!) at 4 years I could leave her for a week and then ride and she would be completely sane!

ETS- I also have a shire x TB that is your classic LW show cob so it may not be a great mix for you.
