Hill work! If you're going to lunge, do it over hills (without side reins I'm thinking, in case the horse loses his balance)! I don't do traditional lunging myself, but I do the whole circling game thing from parelli (lets just call it lunging with a halter and long rope for sanity's sake of anyone who doesn't have interest in parelli), and a few weeks ago I started doing some short sessions of circling up and down a small man-made hill we have at DCS (those of you who've been there it's the L- shaped hill outside the outdoor arena). The part I used isn't particularly steep, but it was still quite tiring for Daisy at first, and it's enough just to do about 5-10 minutes in a session. Crazy stuff though, her topline really filled out quite a lot within 3 sessions over a week (lots of surprised comme.

Great stuff for improving muscular structure in my opinion, especially if you're lacking time for any reason, or just want a change from riding but still want to benefit your horse physically.

Thoughts?

I think it is a very good idea, hacking up hills improves fitteness so why not lunging up hill!
I would certainly lunge my lad on a hill if I had any suitable.

Well we are always told that riding up and down hills is good, so why not lunging. May give it a go, we have the perfect hill at home. Saying that Bodey’s legs still run away with him going down hill at the moment.

It's well worth it! Means you get to stand there and do very little whilst your horse does all the work =P Start off in walk though maybe if he hasn't got the balance yet?
