best thing to put on sore mouths?

You can get Alum powder from the chemist, I used it years ago on a mare with a very sore mouth and it worked fine, it might be less embarrassing to ask for than Preparation H :D:D

Can't see any thing which would work as an anaesthetic in there tbh?

Is benzyl benzoate a banned substance:D

if you google sudocreme it says it has and we don't use it on the racehorses as it's not allowed. It is also not allowed in FEI competitions.

Benzyl benzoate is also a banned substance.

if you get a slip head piece and the thinest snaffle you can find (top half of a double set) wrap the edges of the bit in guaze, and soak in a bitter alum solution (can buy the bitter alum crystals from chemist) and pop on for 10 mins twice a day. it will heal and also harden the skin (doesnt harden the mouth!!) do this for a week or so to strenghthen the skin so it doesnt split again. repeat as req esp before camps/comps etc when you think you might be needing more contact etc prevention is better than cure!

As no one is likely to dope test my horse (we don't do anything impressive enough to require it sadly :( ) I might just used sudocreme this time. Think sending OH out for pile cream sounds like a great plan though :D

Will look at finding something to trying to harden the skin up a bit for future occasions too. Thanks all :)

Gold Label Wondser Gel, ingredients include Comfrey, Calendula, TeeTree, Aloe Vera and rosemary, all these combined help new tissue form, sooth sore areas, as well as being anti bacterial.

Easy to apply as the gel melts into the skin, really us good stuff.

Not used it on a sore mouth but I use loads of Aloe Vera Jelly - if you get a good one with a high % of Aloe it works really well and soothes the area too (but shouldn't be used on broken skin). Me, the horse and the dog all use it ;-)

I have used Zinc cream in the past for a sore mouth which I think is just nappy rash cream.

I'm fascinated by this thread.

All of my happy hacking life, I had never taken a contact with a horse. Got knows how I used to steer actually.

Then, I got meself a 'trainer'. This wonderful woman has almost been in tears of frustration trying to get me to take a contact with my uber strong boy. Eventually I got the picture but it still felt very, very wrong to hold onto him.

My trainer's philosophy was, 'if he doesn't like it, then he can simply comply. He's perfectly flexible and capable of being round, and light in the hand. If he's leaning on your hand, sock him in the bloody jaw! He'll get the picture!'

Huge biceps and rippling back muscles later, I had a pony I could ride on a forward hand no problem. but I always felt incredibly guilty if I ever did give him a 'sock in the jaw'. In fact it became my little guilty secret!

Is my way of thinking common? And what do you all think of this whole tough love contact thing?

Iglu cream is very good. Can buy from chemist- it is for mouth ulcers but don't tell the chemist it is for a horse- I did and they refused to sell it to me as it wasn't licensed for use on animals!?!
