Last year Charisma's hooves were lovely and healthy, but this year they have started to crack rather badly! All her hooves are black, and the ones that are cracked are both her fronts.

I have some cornicresine (cant spell) which I have put on but perhaps I could be putting that on more often. I live next door now so no excuse!

Anything else you can suggest? My instructor said seaweed was good for hoof health but I've been using it for a few months and nothing has changed. She does look mighty healthy everywhere else though!

Thanks all xxx

When I bought my TB x his feet left alot to be desired (despite being made to compete at Intermediate level, some people amaze me), but I took a chance and stuck him on Farriers Formula and was really pleased with the significant difference in his hooves over a relatively short space of time. Would definitely recommend giving that a go?

Everyone seems to say that kevin bacon hoof oil is amazing but I haven't tried it yet as I don't have much need atm.

I also used to use topspec healthy hooves for mine which I found much better than farriers formula and also after a tub or two hooves would be much improved. But not sure if they still make it - maybe have a google!

Also speak to feed company(s) about diet, it may be that something is missing that adding a balancer or another type of feed could address. I find Baileys hugely helpful.

I use Kevin Bacon hoof grease on my farrier's recommendation it's very good and a tub lasts a long time - unless your dog gets hold of it(has animal fat in it and my dog thinks it's delicious!)

My ponies hooves were bloody awful last year, cracking, casting shoes, got to the point there was nowhere for them to put a nail and since I've had her on TOp Spec balancer, they have improved 100%, farrier is astounded.

My Tb had quite bad feet which always cracked and chipped. We applyed cornicresine twice each day and they improved amazingly. Although it is a very slow process but well worth it.

Hey thanks for all your replies guys!

I would post a photo of both hooves but I don't have access to a computer that picks up photos yet. :( As in, recognises my camera!

Her owner has said that her Farrier came out on Wednesday and stapled the crack. Now I know she is not techincally my horse but I'm not 100% happy with this, surely it would weaken the wall even more so? The Farrier hasn't evem suggested what we can do to strenghten the horn, just seemed to have 'solved' it with a quick fix.

That's just my opinion, which I know doesn't really matter seeing as I don't techincally own her!

it's only happened in the past 8 months which I think is odd, before that she had happy hooves :) I'm just trying to think if we've done anything different that might have effected it....

I will be giving Baileys a call next week too :)

whats changed in the last 12months?
i would ensure shes on a balanced diet and also ensure the feet are balanced. maybe having the farrier out every 4/5 weeks rather than 6?
that made a massive difference to my horses feet as well as taking the shoes off to let all the chips and splits grow out!
