YO has been trying to get two of her mares at the yard pregnant by her spotted stallion. She's been trying for the best part of three months but they keep coming back into season. Admittedly on the first attempt she had one go and then stopped so hardly surprising that the mare came back into season. However when the same mare came back into season she was covered around three times in the week that she came into season. That was last month and she has just come back into season again.
What are we doing wrong??

Thankies

Does the stallion have proven fertility? Has she had the vet out to swab the mares - could they be dirty?

Well, we are starting to maybe be suspicious of the stallion, as the lady was very anxious to get rid of him and he was kept on his own. He has apparantly got offspring and he seemed to know what he is doing. I don't think she has had the mares swobbed. One of them has had a foal before (two years ago) so could she have become dirty in that time?

The mares havent really had a chance.
Im assuming if she is putting the stallion on multiple times she isnt scanning to get the optimum time.
1 cover is all it should take, you always run the risk of manking the mares up sticking the stallion on willy nilly.

It doesn't take long at all for a mare to get 'dirty'. One bout of sloppy grass poo could even do the trick if it contaminates the vulva, also as vicijp says excessive use of an unhygienic stallion will muck it all up too.
