Hi everyone,

Can you let me in on your secrets to good topline please? Just bought a lovely little mare but unfortunatley has no topline and poor muscle condition as has been out of work for a year.

What exercise is best for muscle and topline improvement?

Thanks!

Long reining, working with a pessoa and also carrot stretches plus when riding your lovely mare make sure that she is working long and low to create the top line. For muscle building I am a huge fan of hill work gradually working uptowards steeper gradients but always making sure that they are walking / trotting up the hill correctly so pushing from the back end rather than pulling themselves up the hill with their shoulders.

Good luck with her

Thank you very much, really appreciated. Her condition is not too bad but especially around her withers, which are high anyway, just looks a bit boney.

Re feed, are there any good conditioners that actually work and that won't heat her up? Currently on endurance mix, pink powder and sugar beet.

P.S this is my first TB type horse, I have moved away from cobs so totally different!

I have used in the past Baileys outshine for condition and non heating - it is quite pricey but in my mind worth every penny - with the work as well as feeding this with just chaff and nuts my girl turned from a lanky ISH who looked more like pure uinderweight, underdeveloped TB into a very well built girl and as added bonus was v shiny due to the amount of oil in the outshine. Check out the Baileys website can't recommend it enough and no I don't work for them, just loved this product.

^^ if I need to get condition on my TB I also use outshine- it's wonderful stuff, and you probably won't need very much to do the job!!

Hes also on winergy equilibrium- the medium one doesn't heat him up, is low in starch and sugars, and I get him event-fit on it (just a suggestion- I wouldn't imagine you will need endurance mix, but I admit I'm not sure of the content so I could be completely wrong )

I generally usually only use outshine to put condition on in winter, but this last one he hasn't needed it :D

For topline, I head for hills!! Lots and lots of hills, and I always actively walk up them- works a treat :D my horse looks like a tank by the time I've finished with the hills LOL!!

Ditto Letslip.

Good feeding too but do bear in mind that this will only provide her with the building blocks to create the muscle, feed alone does not create topline - muscle cannot grow without work - but decent grub combined with a sensibly-planned work regime should have her looking good in no time....
