I'm looking for a car - about 2 or 3 years old. I want it to be econimical and low insurance but able to tow a two horse trailer

What would anyone suggest??

It would need to be a very heavy car to tow a 2 horse trailer, so unlikely to be economical. You need something like a Land Rover Discovery etc. I have just sold my short wheel base Shogun and bought a LWB Discovery because the Shogun was too light to tow my Equitrek (and I only travel 1 horse).

If in doubt Google the towing capacity and kerbside weight of any vehicle you are interested in.

If you want a car to pull a two horse trailer then you are looking at something like a landrover discovery. They are not cheap to run and not cheap on road tax or insurance.

Original Kia Sorento (newer model has lower towing capacity apparantly).

Mine can tow 2 just fine, is not as thirsty as other 4x4's, not expesnsive to insure and pay £245 for yearly tax, so not in the highest band.

Have had mine 5 yrs, with 91,000 miles on the clock, and has only needed to go the garage for routine issues (touching wood!!)

Mine came with mp3 player/sun roof/cruise control as standard so great for long journeys, but also a decent 4x4 too, coping with last winters snow and ice well.

Landrover Discovery all the way :o they are expensive to run but worth it when you know they can safely tow a two horse trailer comfortably. I have one for my two horse Ifor Wiilliams trailer with two horses and it tows superbly :o

Whats the petrol/diesel consumption like x

Have no idea - all I know is that I can drive from Shrops to London and back on one tank which can't be bad!!

However when we had the snow and ice my hubby borrowed it to go back and forth to work and was really suprised that he did not have to fill it up any more frequently than his VW Beetle....

Mine is diesel.

so is it cheaper to get a lorry ?

Might be - do a spreadsheet with all the running costs and do a comparsion. If you get yourself a really economical little car it might work out better for you. Following costs need to be calculated off the top of my head

Mot/Plating
MOT/Service run about
MOT/Service - heavy towing vehicle
Trailer cost
Trailer service (I can help her - allow around £85 per year)
Insurance - no NCB on the lorry as second car
Petrol costs - try to find out cost per mile of lorry and run about
Cost of lorry
Cost of trailer
Cost of runabout
Cost of car to tow with

If you put that all into a spreadsheet you should be able to work out what is best for you..
