Can I ask what hitch lock people can recommend please? I have always used a wheel clamp type however the last 2 I've ended up struggling with the lock eventually meaning last time it took me ages to get it off which was annoying when I had an event to go to the next day! I just want an obvious (to robbers) hitch lock which fits on a Bateson hitch (I tried one type and it didnt seem to fit?) and is very reliable to take on and off.

I was advised my the insurance company that although a hitch lock was a good idea they also requested a wheel clamp. It was pointed out to me by my mechanic that a hitchlock does not prevent the vehicle being take, it may just mean that the tow hitch is lifted by a chain or something similar and the vehicle can be taken. The insurance company insisted on a wheel clamp on the rear wheel.

Regardless of effectiveness if you don't have a wheel clamp you may invalidate your insurance. I had a friend fall foul of that last year.

We use a bulldog bar wheel clamp (those triangle things are worse than useless!) and an Ifor boot style hitch lock. The insurance only requires the wheel clamp - but you can tow a trailer quite a way in our country with only a wheel clamp and we need to be sure it is still there when we get back!
