My mare really sweats when she travels and come out steaming and dripping. Can any one recommend a good travel rug that will help her dry, not get cold and work . Can't affor a thermatex so need a cheap alternative. Rather get one recommended than buy pot luck.

Its worth keeping an eye on ebay for second hand Thermatex rugs, they are usually in good condition and there are bargains to be had if they are an unpopular colour or size

Here's an idea that may work for you as it has for me! My horse always used to get sweated up in the box to the extent that I needed a sweat scraper when I got to the other side, he was that bad. I tried a supplement call NAF Tempralax, and it worked a treat. It's a liquid that you can add to feed just when you need it. So I used to give mine 10 ml in his evening feed the night before a competition, and the same in his morning feed and it stopped him sweating to the extent that eventually we didn't need to use it anymore. You might need to introduce it a couple of days before your comp or travel, but it worked wonders on my boy :)
It's safe to use when competing x

I've never put a rug on a sweaty traveller. Even in winter the most I would put on my mare would be a thick fleece rug, even when clipped.

Are you talking about rugging a fully clipped horse?
I only rugged mine when there was a cold wind as when they are using all their muscles to stay in balance, surely they will keep relatively warm?
Not same as standing in a stable.
Perhaps yours are sweating because they are too warm?
Just a suggestion....

No rug at all - would seem to be the sensible answer, non?

One of mine sweats if he is rugged, even on a reasonably cool day, he travels naked and I pop a rug on once we arrive so he keeps cool on the journey but is warm while we go off to walk the course or collect numbers.

Thermatex on fully clipped horse in winter,PE nanobon cooler in spring/autumn if it's a cool day and naked at all other times.

I leave ours off when travelling as she sweats a fair bit. If the weathers quite cool I take a rug anyway & just pop it on her before & in between classes xx
