Hey folks, whilst i've been laid up with ankle injury by rising 5yo has developed a splint. No lameness, slight fluid swelling in the leg that easily reduces with cold hosing etc. The splint is obviously unsightly and i'm wondering if anyone can recommend a treatment to reduce the size of them? It has been formed for a few weeks now so past the bandaging stage

My horse got a splint about 8 weeks ago. I put a post on here about it. I was advised everything from complete box rest for 2 months to chucking him out in the field and forgetting about him for 3 months!! I hasten to say that I did not take the advice but consulted my vet instead who advised the use of ice packs (I actually used ice cups for the first 72 hours which are billions of times more effective than hosing/ice packs) and due to his colicky prone nature did not leave him on box rest, again the vet said I could turn him out. I gave him 5 days without riding, then walked him on a hard surface for another 2 days approx 20 mins, then started introducing a few seconds of trot and after about 10 days he was fine in walk, trot and canter on a surface. It was exactly 17 days after the injury before I put him on the walker, jumped him or put magnotherapy boots on him.

I really think ice cups helped my horse in this situation.

I asked the vet if I could do a couple of dressage tests I'd booked into about 10 days after he first came out to see my horse and he just said to see how he got on and if lame call him out again (he never did go lame). He also said that he couldn't see any reason why I could do the mini one day event I'd booked into about 17 days after the day the vet came out. He did both and never had problems. x

fill a cup (plastic) with water put in the freezer once frozen remove from cup rub over splint until it dissolves being careful of frostburn! (is what i think it is)
